    I love this forum

I have learned so much here. But mostly I've come to feel that there is a brotherhood and sisterhood of people out there who are like me. Who see the value in things that others just consider junk. Not everyone gets that. People who understand the difficulties of the lifestyle and the attacks upon it.

Today, I couldn't get some pieces of wrought iron seperated and I didn't have a sawsall or anything like it. The screw was rusted, then painted, then rusted again, I think. It just wasn't reponding to my screwdriver. Together the panels were too big to fit it the SUV. I was about to give up and then I thought about some of the people on the forum and their endless refrain of "hit it with a hammer" so I clutched the unyielding screw with my pry bar and repeatedly whacked at it until it gave. I didn't have to call anyone to come and help me! It was an incredible feeling !

I've learned so much here and I really feel like we are a community, although we frequently disagree. I love that.

Thank you whoever came up with the idea for this blessed place.

Scrappette, you are going to HAVE to get yourself a sawsall AND a grinder. Take my word for it. I've used a sawsall for yrs but I was afraid of the grinder. But I got one and now I don't know how I managed without it. Stubborn screws get one blast with the PBblaster or whatever brand of screw-loosener you like, then if won't budge out comes the grinder...zip zip...she's history. Cuts your time in half. Nice words about the forum...my sentiments exactly.

Scrapette I concur! More than once I've found myself thinking of this forum and some tips I've read here. And who knew garbage or junk or whatever we are going to call it would ever become such a business that a forum would be created for it to share ideas, frustrations, hauls and whatnot?!

There is one thing about a hammer...it works but on a side note...pick you self up a small steel plate from the scrap yard and grind down one edge of it...when you have something you need to brake off or sheer off....use that it will act like a chisel and cut.

Harbor Freight has grinders/sawzalls on sale for 20bucks each all the time. not the greatest tools but they will get the job done.

Never buy a cheap grinder....I have seen some where the chuck comes loose and the disk goes flying or the switch wont release and causes issues..or you put it down and you tap the switch and it comes on.

Buy name brand top of the line when it comes to grinders...thats just my two cents but then again..using it every now and then it MAYBE ok...I use to work on power plants and had to use them all the time....there is a REASON why safety men wont let off brand power tools on there job site.

I personally use a Makita 4.5" and a Craftsman 4" for grinders. I have used the HF ones before and Never had any safety issues other then them randomly dying in a cloud of smoke.

The discs seem to be the biggest safety issue. Cheap disks tend to explode as soon as you turn the grinder on. I would use a HF grinder with Norton disks but would not use my Makita grinder with HF disks!

Blow outs are fun. What really sucks is when the chuck is made out of cheap steel and it crap out on you and start to wiggle lose when your grinding away on a 10 OD pipe (prep work for a welder) and the chuck spins out and the blade slides off and goes shooting some where.

P.s....when you change the blades on the grinders...unplug them please...I had to see photos of peoples hands who did not unplug the grinder when changing the blade...trust me...it looks very painful.

HF stuff is a bit hit and miss, I have gotten good service out of the grinders, the sawzaws don't like heavy work (quick death), they are good for lighter stuff. Let them "rest" between work cycles. HF drills are excellent in my experience, especially the 1/2"..avoid all HF cordless IMO. E-bay has better brands for cheap..especially now with X-mas

With grinders, I'd suggest, get a 9 inch grinder first & get someone to teach you how to use it.

Get one with a 'disc lock, so you can remove the disc easily, maybe even get a better spanner for it, the originals don't seen very good for some reason.
Get one with a 'over center' locking guard, no extra tools to need or loose that way.

The most important fact to know, is that no matter what you are doing, if you let go of it, it should pull away from you.
Leaving you clear of the grinder. Allways.

I set the guard at about 20 degrees clockwise of it being square off the grinders centreline.
Then I let the far away edge of the guard touch the job, then move the grinder around till the disc touches the job, & then grind like that, not always with the guard touching, but close.

When you put it down, make sure the disc doesn't hit the ground first, they don't like sideways pressure & that'll make then crack & then when you start it up, the disc disintegrates..
That'l get you really really hurt. Grinder cuts take ages to heal & never heal up good.

Always unplug the grinder when you go to change the disc, I tuck it into my armpit as once someone picked up the plug thinking it was for somethings else & plugged it in...

Make sure the screws around the head are tight all of the time, between that & having a hot spark short out some windings, nothing else goes wrong with them.
Discs & brushes are replacement items.

    More soonish...
