Got my first car today to scrap out. 1977 Mercury Cougar XR-7

Hey PTS, I don't know if you've seen my other posts on old cars but it hurts my heart to see this one get scrapped. I appreciate you taking the time to list parts off of it at least. It DOES look to be in rough shape so restoration is probably not an option anyway. These aren't that popular yet either. Having said all of that, please consider registering the VIN into this database: http://www.cougarclub.org/registry/r...ationform.aspx It doesn't cost anything; it just helps document these old cars. Whenever I have asked for a VIN off an old car in the past, it's for registeries like these or my own personal "registry" I keep on an external hard drive for my own documentation efforts. I have junked those cats off that model and they are low end payouts, although they should be fine..check the differential it may be 9" that is a quick $100 (they pull). What size are the snow tires, I need 2 ? (coming to Denver on Saturday). I would keep the body around awhile a stuff with any and all ferrous (tin cans!!). I would contact ALL Recycling and talk to a manager..present yourself as a pro seeking a regular relationship, they shred onsite and like regulars..could be worth 5-10$ a ton. Don't forget heater core and wiring. The anti-freeze is also reusable,gas in the tank?? Pull up carpet for change/rings/goodies,prybar seats at corners and seams. Rip out the headliner (just for the fun of it). Congrats..there are lots of cars out there...

235/75/15 are the size of the tires. They are like brand new tread wise. I called all today and they are paying $260 a ton for complete cars and $240 for stripped.

Ill be stripping this car tomorrow since its my day off. I dont want to store this one so I wont be keeping it long. If I get done stripping it tomorrow before the yard closes ill be dumping it then. Looking for the total scrap out on this one just to see what I get. Ill be ebaying the interior partts for sure though. Considering pulling doors and fenders as well.

Partimescrapper if i had paid $300 for this car and spent $10 in gas my yard pays .13 per pound so i would make 145 bucks just off the car without even selling anything else, this is just to give you an idea what kind of payout you should have.

Yeah ill spend a few hours tearing some stuff out and get paid better for sure tomorrow. Cool part about the yard im taking it to doesnt require you to drain anything. They said I could drive it in if i wanted too. Do it all on a bill of sale as well no title needed. I think ill do ok on this car. Will use profits to pay off the trash man for the year. promised to hook them up at christmas time for taking all my trash all year. 2 real nice guys its a mom and pop trash company. So ill probable give them $50 each.

UPDATE

Well I spent 3 hours this morning taering into this car. Took it to the scrap yard and got $550 for everything. Car weighed 4100 lbs rads wire and alternator and starter paid $65.

THe intake ended up being cast iron so didnt bother taking that or carb off.

I still have cats to sell somewhere. (THey offered $18 rach for them)
Battery to sell on CL
front snow tires to sell on CL unless area67 needs them

So far im looking at a $230 profit after fuel costs. Not bad for my First car. And it was fun tearing it apart.

Who wants to buy my cats?

Yeah 5 hours tops. I spent more time walking from tool shed to street to get tools then I did stripping down the car. I did it sitting on the trailer.

Glad it worked out for you PTS, I would have invited myself over to help but today was the one day this week I had to be somewhere.

Yeah very good job, that's the kind of money i like to make every time I scrap a car but unfortunately it doesn't always work out like that but this will definitely help build your confidence up for scraping vehicles.

Wish Idaho was that way. As it stands now every yard I have been to requires a title. In the past a few forum members have suggested cutting them down and taking pieces in. They pay less that way. No idea why.

So any time I get a car, I have to stand in the DMV line with 7,000 other people, of which I am pretty certain 1/2 of them are getting renewals of which could be done ONLINE.

Then I finally get to the clerk so I can re-title it, pay fees, etc and then have a 2 week turnaround on title before I can take the car to scrap. Huge waste of my time and resources.

Man, you got your money tied up for a long time before turnaround.

Exactly. That's what is so frustrating. I see a lot of members talking about their state not requiring a title to scrap cars, while here they screw us over. On top of the turn around time the trailer is tied up until I can turn the car. Plus the capital that I could be using to get more cars.

Thinking out loud...wonder what Oregon's regulations are. I am about 40 minutes out of Ontario.

I don't do a lot of cars, but there was a period I had 3 waiting to get hauled in. I want to focus on cars more, but this turn around nonsense is crap.

@ Mdg: A little off topic here, but do you sharpen your blades or have someone else do it? And if someone else does it is it worth the $$$ to resharpen as opposed to just buying new ones?
