Thought I actually got this job

Got a call from a lady who had "items" to sell, which were in an old home that literally had the walls caving in the the floor rotting. Turns out that she wanted this old abandoned country homestead cleaned up. Much of the obvious scrap and items of value had already been plundered, but after a long phone conversation and two on-site visits, I made a deal with her and her older son on a cash value for items in the house and surrounding yard. Cash for what was laying around, and any other items I could salvage from the house would be my pay for cleaning up the area.

Wife and I loaded loaded up the truck and were about ready to close it up for the day, and here comes her husband across the field with his shotgun. Furious. Wanted his stuff back. Much of it we had dug out from under debris.

Wow. Didn't need or want the stuff that bad. I have other work I can do on Monday. We returned the prized items back into the collapsing house, got our money back and headed off to our next pick up. Gotta love this job.

If it was his wife's stuff and not his, I would have told him he had two choices. Back off, or deal with the authorities.

As long as someone gives me authorization, I don't put up with other people's attitudes.

True to an extent, but the gentlmen's wife hired him to do work for her. Therefore, he has a legal right to be on the property.

A gun is boss , What i feel bad about is George pulled out stuff from the house & in a sense helped the guy get his hands on the stuff that might have been hard to get at. Sorta like George did inventory for the guy for free.

If someone pointed a shotgun at me, I'd raise my hands in surrender and ask them where they wanted me to unload the stuff.

I usually do carry a gun with me, good to have with cash transactions. It was more surreal than threatening. I did do a bit of inventory for the family, but there was really only a few pieces that I really wanted, the rest were sort of meh.

It definitely would not have been a big moneymaker, but have been dealing with a broken leg and followup surgery for the past couple of months. Was looking forward to a little more physical work for a few days as a change of pace.

Hey, if the man with the gun says that box of cr@p belongs back in the collapsing house, I'll take my money back and be on my way. I have my cash, he has his cr@p, I'm onto my next job.

Torker, you are a hoot, man. I didn't clean it and repair it, but it was neatly boxed up for the archeologists when they dig through the ruins 200 years from now.

And that's why i have my CWP. Always carrying when out working. I avoid ALL situations like this, but if someone pulls a gun on me, i AM protecting myself.

I'm not sure where you live. But in Texas has a right to protect his property. I'm glad you and your wife are safe. You did the right thing. Looks like his wife did not talk to him about giving his stuff away. That can really piss a man off. Just remember he who has the gun makes the rules.lol

Hell, we don't have guns in NZ.

Well not like that anyway, hunting only & then theres a lot of stuff you have to do, separate ammo & guns, not in the same car, not accessible from inside it & no handguns at all.
