added another famiy member to my network list!

My oldest younger brother (Below me) has a job that I'm not even sure what it is exactly -he went to school for it after getting out of the Navy and working on nuclear subs. He goes to businesses and keeps their systems running, not heating/cooling, something else not sure exactly but it isn't computer systems (like office systems) but the systems that run big warehouse lines I think. anyways, we went out together the other day on his vacation day and he asked me do I break down electric motors. why yes, yes I do!! I told him I meant to ask if he ever runs across old parts and what does he do with them? Well, he is going to keep a bin in his work van for me as he said he has just been throwing motors / parts away! He is also going to save circuit boards for me too. Now, I'm assuming the stuff he is going to save for me is going to be nice sized stuff and I told him I'd even supply the bins if he has other road guys at his work. He stops at my moms every couple weeks on his routes so he will leave stuff there for me as he fills a bin. I can't wait to open the garage there and find out what kind of goodies he left behind for me!!

Now, this is what I've been aiming for since I started doing this and I now have a nice size network between family and friends. THIS is a bigger opportunity to extend out even further than friends and family and this brother will bring me anything from his work that HE himself didn't work on also!! Woot!!

P.S. mods, not sure if this was the right spot for this thread, move if need be!

Looks like the right place to me. I'd say you had a pretty good day. One thing about it - you're not likely to lose it to the competition!

Good deal New. Glad you have a new connection, even if he has been around all your life. LOl

Scrap sources can stem from anywhere, at anytime. I find the more I talk to my friends about my scrap adventures the more I hear, "Man if I knew that I would have given them to you, I just cleaned out my garage and tossed 3 computers" I sigh and they say, " Well now that I know I will save stuff and just call you."

Sounds like a great connection for goodies! Like the trunk of a growing tree ready to branch out in all directions.

Eeeeeee!!!!!!!! He called me today and said he dropped something off for me at my dads! I called over there and said what is it he left and my mom said they look like a transmission and my dad said it looks like a motor with a transmission on it. I can't wait to get over there and see what these puppies are!! He said they are heavy and not sure if I can get them apart or not (brother did) and I told him I'm sure as heck gonna try! Lol.

If you don't know how to tear apart an automatic transmission, it would be worth your while to fool around with it and learn. I think there's a couple of web sites that shows a typical breakdown. Then go around to independent repair shops (both general auto and transmission). I've picked up quite a few for free or a couple of dollars. The case is all cast aluminum. If you don't break them down, they go as Irony Aluminum. I don't fool with aluminum motors and let them go as Irony.

Good deal! Sounds like you will be adding an air ratchet and impact to your tool box next.

Thank you Mick for the advice! And I've never torn one down so this will be a new one for me! I can't imagine what these things are!

Joe, my dad bought an impact wrench when I bought my air chisel but neither one of us have a ratchet yet. Lol, have to add that to the list!

Some transmission shops will pay you more for the transmission housing than the scrapyard; they often need transmission housings to replace the one torn up in a wreck.

    That sounds pretty sweet!

I'm trying to do the same kind of thing, it has honestly surprised me how often people are willing to help out once they know you scrap metal.

I tore down an AT over the weekend. Dang it, I should have documented the tear down. Came out of an AWD van so it has more aluminum than normal.

When all the bolts are out and you can't figure out why it won't slide out, break out the sledge.

Probably the single hardest thing was the fill plugs. They seal them in or something. Finally had a bright idea to put a weed torch on them and was able to wrench it out. Or an impact, which I don't have, would probably work.

Just dawned on me. The case that had the fill plugs was on the transfer, so it won't apply to your transmission.

I have seen them seal them in with a darkbrown gasket goo resin like stuff, turns solid over time.
I have found in a lot of cases (sic) that drilling a 5mm hole down beside the plug, encroaching in thru both of the threads, loosens them up enough to unwind them out.

With stuck studs, I put two nuts onto the thread, flanges together & tighten them up against each other, then give the stud a bash with a hammer directly on its end, then undo the stud using the bottom nut.
The bashing drives the stud in again, normally its sorta welded itself against the side of the thread closest to you & bashing it breaks that weld.
Bashing the stud also mushrooms the end of the stud so the nut won't undo as easily.

If that fails, putting a spanner on each nut & tightening them up against each other, then undo it at the same time.
If that fails, I bash around the outside of the nuts so it goes sideways, that opens the hole up a little.

If that fails, I try & bash the stud sideways & over, so its bent at 90deg, then slip a metal tube over the stud & unwind it sideways, that gives you leverage on the thread.

Next is drilling a 1/8th drill hole down beside the thread, thats messy, it can easily break the drill bit, they cost $$ too.
Thats pretty much the last thing I do.

The last thing? Cold chisel the metal around the stud off, or just cold chisel the rest of the stud sideways out of the casting.

The fill plugs were recessed, designed to take a 3/8 ratchet or extension.

    ****UPDATE****

They are not AT's from vehicles, they are some sort of industrial motors with what looks like a transmission coming off the motor. Went to pick one up and that sucker is HEAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More like this but different size -

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Baldor-Relia...51394417355274

and with the square gear box on them, I think I am going to have to turn them in as is, I think I'd get more money turning them in as motors
