True, and nothing lasts as long as it used to. If I pick up something I don't bother breaking it down anymore just put it in the shred pile, or dirty aluminium, dirty brass or dirty stainless piles. Of course unless it is clean then goes according.
    Better than the dump!

A good example would be AC window units. Compared to the older models, they are pretty much mostly plastic inside now. the older ones would be all steel framed and real heavy. now everything is so cheap. The coils are super thin, the blower motors are small they arnt stripping out the copper, the fan blades are plastic, not aluminum. the wiring is super thin, and even the copper tubing is so thin. i took the shell off a newer model and the shell hit the copper lines when i took it off and blew out the refrigerant and oil all over.

Even with refrigerators. they last what? 10yrs now.... the older ones will run forever. i got one in my basement that was my great grandma's from the 60's and runs like a champ. All these new fridges are crap, especially any Samsung and LG appliances are complete trash. scrap fridges weigh like nothing now a days. almost 1 hand them in the truck so i wont even bother with them. and that flammable refrigerant they use now is crap too, all those burn out the gas and are empty when you scrap them. And even the outer steel on fridges are super thin. i hit one with a hatchet and went right threw, i hit an older one and it didnt even go threw the steel.

I can keep going on this topic but ill shut up now.

I hear you on the AC window units. I see the same thing with dehumidifiers. They're mostly plastic and don't last very long. I get paid to break them down and prep them for Freon removal. The Freon removal outfit comes in and pumps out all the refrigerant & oil once we get a certain number of them accumulated. It's a fast process. They bang through em' in no time and leave the scrap for us to deal with. It's not so bad if you're paid to do it but doing it for the scrap value alone would be difficult. It's a lot of work and trash to deal with for not much gain.

Most of the transfer stations in this are are charging $ 40.00 to accept any Freon unit these days. That helps offset the cost of dealing with them.

Great point on the newer dehumidifier's... they are probably over all the worse when it comes to plastic waste. Them older ones that are all steel are way better, even tho steel isnt that great a payout, but its better than nothing for the plastic. But those newer ones are pretty much just good for the compressor weight. Not to much to the coils in them now either.
