    New job

So I got a cool new job recently. For the last year I was running a mobile welding rig welding all sorts of nonsense. I’d head to the scrap yard every now and then. But recently some guy was wanting me to drive trucks for him. I didn’t know what he was hauling but I said I would. Turns out we’re hauling stuff for the nations largest scrap yards. So I haul an open top trailer all over the place now and go into all these different yards. Pretty cool I think. Guess I’ll see what I can learn while I’m doing this.

Congrats. If you step out of the truck at these yards (assuming this includes refineries as well) the education you can share on the forum would be a gold mine. Good luck on this adventure.

Congratulations on hauling those gondola trailers around! We don't see them a lot here in Las Vegas except for steel loads going to the port. If they have you haul this way first beer is on me

I don’t think they’ll be sending me out to Vegas for anything but then again this place operates way different than any yard I’ve ever seen. Most of what I’ve been running has been shred going up to their big shredder in Toledo(some of you may know the yard I’m hauling for). As for what patriot said I do get out and try and talk to people as much as possible. Apparently this yard has yards in pretty much every state. I’ve already learned a lot here but there is always more to learn. I definitely got some questions for either you or nick pistone regarding torching but I’ll probably put them up in the paid for section of the forum When I get time. It’s pretty interesting how this yard system as big as it is uses outside contractors like Pistone to do their torching for em. All the yards I worked at just used some guy like me who worked there to run a torch and knock stuff apart. I’ve never seen burning contractors before. But then again I’ve never seen a #351 propane tip before either. To me a number #4 was always considered big. At this place that seems to be child’s play.

I will give out some advice on here though, if anyone decides to purchase a big gondola trailer definitely look into getting a gate that’s either mesh or has a bunch of holes in it. These solid door ones are pretty much like a parachute coming down the road. I’m pretty sure I get better gas mileage running full loads than I do running empty.

They don't have a Vegas operation though one of their jointly owned subsidiaries is here. Their shredder here is a pretty impressive operation but their pricing....leaves something to be desired for aluminum breakage and other low value shreddables

I’m not sure how they operate elsewhere but I rarely see them have time for anything but steel shred at this shredder. They don’t run it like the hammer mill I worked at that’s for sure. Then again I don’t see how they have time for anything other than steel shred. We build mountains there everyday. Every night they run it down to nothing. Then we build mountains again and the cycle continues.
