    Appliance Cord Scrap

I started a new job about 13 months ago, so I havent gotten any new scrap in that long so I figure its time to start turning in some stuff that isnt worth a whole lot but still taking up space. I took in 6900lb of electric motors Saturday and now have my sights set on taking in all the 110v power cords that I cut off of the fridges and washers. I figure I have about 1500lb of those. 16 to 18 awg insulated wire. What would this wire go as? I have a few choices of yard to take them to. The one I took the motors to is not the best paying but electric motor price is the same everywhere and this yard is close. I plan to take the cords to a yard that deals alot in nonferrous so the pricing is better. Heres what their website says for copper insulated.
CU PREM. INSULATED WIRE (CLEAN): $1.20
CU PREM. INSULATED WIRE (DIRTY): $1.00
    CU INSULATED WIRE: $0.50
    COMPUTER WIRE: $0.10

Those would be just cu insulated wire (the one @ $0.50 on your list, it's $0.40 by me).

Those higher categories I think are for solid copper wires types, where as the ones off appliances are standard copper. So like Romex and thhn wire are probably those upper 2 categories.... At least that's would be my guess

You can always call, and ask and tell them your amount they may give you better prices for an amount like yours at 1500lbs

Here power cords go as extension cords. I also use a yard that deals more in non ferrous and they actual pay less than the shredder yard pays for them.

Shredder yard pays .30/lb and the non ferrous yard only pays .19/lb so best is to call around for the best deal.

A price list in a yard provides a framework to negotiate. When you have big loads of a specific commodity and it is clean so all they have to do is unload it to their containers, some will negotiate a price. You could expect .50/lb. if you do not negotiate for quantity. If properly sorted (by recovery rate) at my regular yard and your prices I would get between .70 and .75 cents a lb.
Give back more to this world than we take.

Patriot76, the yards around here dont know what negotiate means. They have their price, and if you want to negotiate, they will show you the door. Theres not THAT many yards around us, but still there are a few.... but the majority are owned by the same individual.

Its similar by me, I never have tried to "negotiate" but know one of the 2 yards does pay different rate for "commercial" amounts of material.... IE the guys with the tractor trailers of material coming in get more per lb then the "ever-day" scrap peddlers coming in in pickups. 1500Lbs or wire is a pretty solid amount... maybe dont trie to negotiate per-say, but just ask, "is there any increase in rate if I have a certain amount of lbs of material?" and see what they say. It may all depend on the size of the yard too.... I think I read from a member on here that owns a yard that they get something like 40,000lbs of various wire per day.... so.... 1500lbs, while a lot to you and me, may not be enough for any "commercial"/increased rates. But call around to the 2 yards and ask, or just take it in and get your $0.50/lb and move on
