Record load more proof I need a larger truck and/or a trailer .8705 tons

My warehouse contact (my neighbors’ son) texted me pictures for metal they needed removed from a warehouse even closer to my home than the one I normally pick up from.

This warehouse is 1.2 miles from my house. The scrapyard I took the load to was 2.4 miles away from that warehouse.

Long story short we loaded (a warehouse guy helped me) 1740 lbs. of clean ferrous in my 98 Dakota. The person at the yard scale was shocked and said that I was nearly dragging and on the way out called over another person I see there all the time, I showed him pictures because he didn’t see me drive in. “What the?! 1740 pounds?!” cause he’s seen my little truck many times.

Payload of my truck with a 6.5-foot bed I think is 1200 or 1250 – the most heavy-duty Dakota in 98’ had a 1700lb payload capacity and an 8-foot bed.

If you don’t know what a Dakota is (not everyone knows/cares), it’s a mid-sized truck. It’s smaller than a full-size truck like a Ford F150 and larger than a compact like a Toyota Tacoma or Ford Ranger. Colorado/Canyon is close to mid-sized but still smaller. Point being is that my truck is far too light duty for the load I had.

The warehouse was closing early, so I didn’t have much time to remove all the metal they wanted gone that day. So instead of making 2 trips I loaded all they needed for the day in one load. I tied it down for perception reasons, not a chance that the load could move but it would look bad if I didn't tie it down.

I might have been able to make 2 trips out of it before they closed (and maybe should have), but for their convenience and good customer service I did it in one load. I have more metal to pick up next week from them.
If I break this record with this truck, my truck will be broken as well. I didn't notice it was sagging so much until after we finished loading it.

Congrats on the nice haul! Would be a little worried about the suspension and brakes but super worried about the potential ticket if you got pulled over!

Thanks. I was worried about both my suspension and brakes, but I drove it nice and slow and gave myself more stopping distance than I would even in snow. I am glad the yard wasn't far and the roads were not congested.

I wasn't too worried about a ticket because although it wasn't the smartest move to overload - and I wouldn't do it again, I have seen so much worse with loads not tied down etc... and the PD in my area absolutely do not care. I've seen them just pass stupid loaded trucks and even sit next to them in traffic and just not give a rats.

I've only exceeded the payload once before but it was only by ~20-40lbs not 500+lbs and after cleaning it I ended up under payload when taking it to the yard - my previous record.

This is also proof that you can avoid picking up freezers and refrigerators (because of not having equipment and licensing to dispose of coolant) and still make $$.

    Ha!

    Nice haul.

What the heck are those things used for? if you don't mind me asking. Neat thing about this job is the stuff you come across and see. One guy is hauling cans another some weird looking thing, another guy has ac's, etc etc etc.

I overloaded my old van once. I had a lot further then you to go the yard at the time. Let us say it was an interesting drive an I would never do it again. lol. I found out that day the metal from ceilings being replaced is quite heavy.

    Well done!

    Keep it up.

Mattress box spring insides.. (?) he told me but I actually don't recall what they are called. They are from a mattress factory/warehouse.

Wow! You have overloaded your truck ONCE? You must never get drunk (exceeding the alcohol limit) or tear the tag off your mattresses or lift with your back instead of your legs or brush less than 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth. LOL! There have been loads where I could have thrown half off the truck and I still would have been overloaded.

How did you load and unload it?

If you can, you should save some money and treat yourself to a new trailer or a good used one.

Me and a warehouse person just manually loaded it. 4 of them at a time weren't heavy.

I took about 20 maybe 25 minutes minutes of lifting about 4-5 of those things at a time from the side standing in the bed - (yeah I know another 212lbs of weight in it) and tilting/pushing it over the back.

I just hauled in 2500 lbs of printers with my tacoma...on my trailer lol

My 4x8 carson can handle 5000 lbs if I had heavier tires. As it is I can haul 3600 with it.

Glad it worked out, I would imagine that's fairly light steel though, but I guess with the sheer volume there's no fear of coming up with nothing for a lot of work.

It worked out to a little better than $95/hour.

I am not a real scrapper I just play one on TV (and I am a part-timer at that). I can't get myself to put wood on the sides and the front of the bed to hold more stuff (but it would have saved the right third of my back window), but if I did, maybe I would have overloaded more than twice. So i guess I am saying it's hard to overload cause I can't stack enough things in it to do so without them falling out. I have never had such a large amount of dense material as this last time. I've had 5(?) washer/dryers and a stove - took up far more space but not even close to 1740 lbs and still not overloaded - weight wise.

OMG!! Guess I should have knocked on wood or something after my post last night about my trailer. I broke a leaf spring and shredded a brand new tire hauling a fairly light 800lb tree stump to the dump this morning! LOL!

Tires were 4 days old but thankfully I bought the road hazard warranty. Thankfully pot holes breaking a leaf spring and shredding the tire on fender bolts is covered under warranty!

Lucky it happened on a country road so I pulled off about 20 ft into the dirt to do the repairs. Cost me $50 and 4 hours between running to get a tire a new spring and grabbing floor jacks/tools from my house.

Picked up 1840 lbs. more material from them - 2 separate loads this time one load of 920 ferrous second load 740 ferrous + 180 non-ferrous. Second load took some time cause I had to crack out the angle grinder so as to not have an idiot load... so I made less per hour this time but still these 2 loads combined paid more than last load.

Did you're loads go as light steel price (the lowest stuff they'll take) or something better? Just curious.

2 loads went as "scrap" aka "shred" except the last load that had some non-ferrous that I separated out.

Not quite the lowest stuff - they actually pay less for stainless breakage than "scrap" aka.. "shred" (found that out once) but no - nothing special since only the first load was 100% clean and all the same thing, last 2 loads had vary small amounts of plastic and paint and was "mixed ferrous".
