    520's Scrap Finds

Huge Craigslist score. I picked up around 2k lbs of stereos, DVD, modems, routers, Blueray and VHS players yesterday. I now have a constant stream of ewaste from this contact I made through the free section of craigslist. The guy buys pallets of electronics at auctions. He is in the resale business and has no desire to bother with the lesser value items. He buys 1-8 pallets a week and supposedly almost every pallet comes with items he is not interested in reselling.

Next week I am going to break down 10 of each item, weigh everything and see what is worth breaking down. Up until now I have been breaking down all my ewaste but I've had the spare time. With this new supply of ewaste I really need to figure out what is worth breaking down and what isn't worth it. I know modems and routers are worth breaking down but i am unsure about the dvd, blueray, stereos and VHS.

Whoa! Have fun with those VCR's.. if you don't already own one. Run out and purchase a BFH! Unless you are 100% Zen.. a VCR will eventually make you reach for one!

I have tips for you 520...

    but first...

A congratulation's goat is in order. Cause getting a repeat customer of that size is a good thing.

Sirscrapalot's tips to giant piles of various electronics...

    1. Break down many of one thing. So you get a "good" idea of what you'll find in them in the future. Not everything is the same.

    2. Have your area organized where your going to break things down. Bin for waste, bin for your various metals/items, etc. For example...I would have a bucket/tub for cords, vcr heads, heat sinks, brown boards, green boards(to go back later through), various other bins an boxes.

    3. Have a plan for your trash. Plastic is hard to get rid of in a lot of places, some it's easier. Find out what your area does, and if there is a better option. Same with glass if you end up with tv's or anything else with glass. Cardboard also. You can at lest find buyers for cardboard. You'll need a lot of weight but someone will buy it!

    4. Work smart, not hard.

    5. Prep your work area - Have all the tools, screwdrivers, etc you'll need to get the breakdowns done as fast as your able/comfortable.

    6. Don't waste your time checking every board as you pull it. If it's brown throw it in a bin, same with green, or any other color you find.

    7. This goes with 6. Once you have your boards in piles/bins/etc, go back through them an check for the good stuff. Sort further as needed. If you need further info on sorting boards plenty of threads an posts in the archives from those who came before that said it better then I can.

    8. Have a cooler.

    9. Have a radio.

    10. Fill the cooler, an use it.

    11. I'll add more later if I think of them or remember them.

    12. Oh...an be safe breaking stuff done. Never know what you will find.

Once you break down enough of those things...an I say things cause there is a lot there, lol. You will get faster. My first tv's took me forever, now I can do them a hell of a lot faster. Your radios, DVD players, stereo Receivers, an such will always vary by brand, year, etc. Don't assume the high end brands are the best, you'd be surprised. This is true with the receivers and radios especially car radios.

You found a good client it seems. Always to have what I call a "Feeder" client. They will feed you stuff all day long til you say uncle, an that's great when you want to learn or make sure you always have work coming in.

Forgive me for inserting my advice an tips. It's an area I've done quite a bit an the above all work for me. Adapt as you need to fit your needs and desires. No point learning stuff if you don't bother to pass it on to those who come behind you.

Good luck 520, may the goats be with you.

Sirscrapalot - People may laugh but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank. - One of our very own...Mick

Printers have a solid mid grade board that is usual easily accessible through one of the side panels. Very quick to remove

Yeah I did grab those boards off the 3 bigger office printers. It's the small printers for home use that I am not touching at all.

I figured if I remove all the metal from the plastic boom boxes I'm not going to be able to toss them in the shred pile. then I'm just going to be stuck with a bunch of plastic that's hard to get rid of.

You could sell the plastic to a company in the state of California that makes straws.

You never know. Black market straws could become a new lucrative venture for those seeking additional income

5 APC's total some loose boards and if anyone knows what these pieces of extruded aluminum are let me know. I have about 15 pieces new in package but they don't have a part number or anything indicating what they are.

Hard to tell with the angle but my first guess was a shelf tag or desktop name plate holder (whatever it's called lol)

heat sinks and small copper windings, man thats awesome but a ton of winter work. stuff to be done in front of a TV when its too cold outside to get bigger stuff. All those are a headache with a ton of small screws and little value for the time spent. Something is better than nothing and a steady stream is worth its weight in copper.

Yeah I actually don't down break down a lot of the scientific equipment I get in. I take the easy to pick items and the rest goes in the shred pile. For instance with the centrifuge I took the brass tubes and the piece of aluminum that held the tubes while the rest went in with shred. I used to be able to break down everything.

I do save back some lower grade stuff for when I hit a slump but there has been no slump for the last several months so it's time to clear out some of that stock pile.

Yeah I am saving name brand vintage stuff to test and possibly sell. But I probably won't come across much of that since the guy I am getting this from is an electronics seller himself. But even so I have about 15 items I have set aside to test.
