    Satallite ends circuit boards

I am finally getting around to breaking down the satallite receiver circuit boards. This is probably a dumb question but. In one of the satallite ends, there was a piece of gold metal behind one of the circuit boards. This was gold through and through. Could there be a chance this piece of metal could be a low carat gold? I would think it would be too expensive to use in mass production satallites. I figured SMF would be a good place to start getting answers.

I'm no expert, but it looks like brass to me.

A lot of the pictures I take of gold on circuit boards might look like brass or something else which is probably the case here. The lighting has to be perfect to show the gold.

Ask your buyer what he/she will pay for it and work from there. I know SirScrap from up the coastal area has some experience with them. He has written about it

Those things look really juicy, but there's 47 brazzillion tiny torx screws to get to them.

It's the board inside the LNB arm of the Sat. Dish.

I posted a few thousand posts ago on these. The info in the thread should still be valid to boot.

When I checked into pricing it wasn't very good at the time. I save mine for being refined.

An as Auminer said...the bajillion sucks big bugger bars. A screwdriver(flat) will work very well for getting the proxy/glue/whatever of the outer casing unless your getting them already open. I miss Mech at times like this...he could tell you exactly where the thread is an give you a link. Oh an don't be suprised if you find a few without the gold plating on them and are fabric of some type. An it looks like bronze but it's not.

Good luck, an yes, they are lovely boards.

I'd sure welcome a truckload of those and would have no problem taking them apart.

Small screws suck but once you have the bits you need it helps. Also some of the screws are covered with the caulking as well. Not fun but good boards.

They take me no time nowadays, but when I first started getting them they took me forever.

A good drill will make short work of the screws. I use a screwdriver myself, flat head for the gunky stuff, an phillips for the screws. Phillips will also get through the gunky stuff on the scews. Or scrap it off. It gets easier like most things the more you do them. I mainly use a chisel for removing the gunky stuff, an prying the cases open. They don't bend or break..the chisel not the case. I use an old one that is to far gone to be of use as a chisel, but it's great for prying **** open! :P

They are very light but if you got a source for them you'll stay busy an make the weight.

    As always,

    YMMV

Bleh...that gold/brass insert thing is....I dunno. Not gold tho. The plating on the board is gold tho.

Apologies. I missed the part about the "gold looking" sheet. Far as I can tell it's just there to confuse the situation. LOL.

Good stuff, I love those LNB boards. Gold makes me happy, it may not be a lot but **** it, it sure looks good!

It's the little thing like those LNB boards that keep me doing this. Never know what will be in the next item I break down, even if I've done a bunch before.

Sirscrapalot - Life would be boring if it was predictable.

It is gold but just a few microns, if you come across the ones coated in silver they are a bit heavier. But the buyers don't give much more for them. I have a stack of each, just hoarding till I get enough to fill a flat rate box.

And if you don't want to break them down you can put them in with your dirty aluminum a little bit better than shred.

So my sister in law says there is a satellite dish behind her house I was going to pass but went on a beer run. Found 5 dishes and one of them looks like this... I will have to break it down to see how good it is
