Ten Days in the Life of a Scrapper....

The wife and I have celebrated every five years of our marriage with a special vacation. Last year was our 15th, but with the birth of a grandchild and not being able to decide on a destination, we did not do a good one. This year, Debs threw down the gauntlet and said we are going to do something special.

We talked about an Alaskan cruise, but we did not want to pay that much. We talked about just landing in the Anchorage area and driving around and puddle jumping on small aircraft, but we worried about the remoteness and lack of interesting things to do, so....

We decided to fly to San Francisco and spend a day or two in that area. We are going to get a car and drive to Yosemite and see that area for a day or so, then head north to Carson City/Tahoe area and up to Reno and spend a day or so in that area. We will then travel up to Crater Lake and spend two nights there in a little B&B Hotel we stayed at and enjoyed in '10. The next day we take off and drive over to the coast and up to Portland to catch a plane back home.

For me, a road trip is the best. You can tool along and stop anywhere that catches your eye or heart. We are really looking forward to this trip and if anyone knows of anything along our way that you have really enjoyed and think we should consider, please feel free to add a POI for us to research. It is a few months out and I will post updates and pictures once we get back as I don't really feel comfortable posting a a week away from the house (we do have a monitored security system to help with our peace of mind)

Not familiar with areas , But road trips seem to give great memories even on the simplest terms .
Most often in a new town and just walking into a supermarket is fun when your in different territory.
For me the memories of flying has never been that grand till destination at least .
Yet being in Lancaster PA in a Weiss market on vacation
remembering my kids faces with innocence is a great memory

    Any way have fun !!!

If it happens to encompass the 21st of August this year, there'll be a total solar eclipse tracking all the way across the US. The missus & I are heading to western Nebraska to view it. Hopefully at Carhenge but the advantage of western Nebraska is straight-shot roads and a tendency for clear days in late August.

I forget the name of the park/nature preserve I saw around San Francisco, but I'll never forget the sequoia trees, very cool and worth seeing when you're there

I made arrangements for a place to stay at the GA, TN, SC, NC state lines back in '12 because I knew the hotels would book up. My plan is on track. What makes it really great is that I landed a job to tow a trailer from Florida to Maryland. Pretty much changes and no pay trip into a paid vacation. Whoot! whoot!

    Disadvantage is...it's Nebraska.

    I KID I KID!

    Time for a distraction..

    Congrats on 16 years TO!

Road trips rock. Told the wife next year we head out west...take 40 an hop off an on to 66.

Road trips are great tho...you can head out with one destination in mind, an end up doing something completely different due to finding something or somewhere along the way.

Favorites of traveling trips...Bourbon trail in Kentucky, Cadillac ranch, and silly stop in the middle of Arizona or NM ( I forget which) where for a buck you can view an alien! The signs you see leading up to it are funny to.

Have fun, stay safe, an be ready to share your adventures with us. Or at lest me...I dig road trips.

Out west is filled with fun random things.

Having just got back from doing a trip down 95 south to Fl...I can tell you the east coast is boring. No Thing, no Cadillac ranch, no big ass ball of string, or a 500 ft. Paul Bunyon and OX...go west young man, go west.

Yeah, but out there there isn't a traffic jam from Richmond VA to Albany NY. No worlds biggest ball of string is going to top that.

Grand Canyon trip a couple-few years ago, we took a road that looked ""kinda curvy"" on the map as we were headed back to Texas. Pulled over at this mountain lake near Eagar AZ for a picnic lunch of peanut butter & nanner sammiches. I can't describe how those sammiches were sheer manna from the heavens in that setting.

And speaking of the chaddywhack ranch... me & my little brother there circa 1984 or 5:

Thanks for making me dig those pics up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Your welcome! Thanks for sharing!

I need to drop you a pm to catch up Auminer.

An yes...the cadillacs are much more colorful now. lol. Much as I pick on Texas an it's fine residents, it's a very beautiful state to drive thru if you take the time to look an get out of the big cities. Boring as hell the drive from Dallas to El Paso back when I did it, but it had it's moments that for sure. Still trying to figure out how all those "gentlemen clubs" survive with nothing around for miles an miles. Another mystery of life.

I drove each and every time I've been out west, an it was always a good trip. Whether it ended in Az, Cali, or Kansas.

I say again...head west for road tripping adventures. History, Beauty, Hilarity...its all around.

Thanks for the thread TO hopefully we didn't threadjack you to bad with all these suggestions.

Just a different view of going west. You are better off heading to one of the coasts. In the west we have less traffic than stop signs or stop lights, more people than stop signs, more horses than people, more cows than horses, and more wildlife than cows. It is boring with endless miles of prairie and trees that block out the forest. The original poster has the right idea, head to the coast.

In the four communities closest to my homes there are a total of four stop signs and that is 20 miles to the closest town of 2,000. When I get lonely I drive 5 miles to the first paved road and hitchhike just to visit with someone.

As you can see it is a simple and boring life that we love. So please go where the people are.
Give back more to this world than we take.

I say the same about my sandbar.

Myrtle beach an Virginia beach are much more suited for tourists...then my little sandbar.

The lack of traffic an big box stores turns a lot of folks away...who knew.
