Looking for opinions on this job

Not to worry I will NOT be burning this nor would I ever think that was a viable option for this project or any other.

After some research I have gotten some info as for the disposal of the boat.

-My local (city) land fill will not take it even cut into chunks I would have to cut it up beyond being recognizable as a boat and the time to do that is just to much.
-The regional land fill (privately owed) will take it at .04lb or a min of $80.00. so I think this is the fastest way to do this if the trailer can handle the move even if it coasts $80.00.
May try and up the price to $250.00 figure ill have 4 hours into the project, $80.00 tip fee and $20 in fuel. so I would clear $150.00 for my time.

Still planning to get out there this weekend to drain the boat and check the trailer out in person plus ill be picking up a blown riding mower and anything I can fit on the trailer that he has saved for me (this stuff has nothing to do with the boat deal as that is with his out of town brother).

The lead is intriguing

It looks like an old McGregor, there is a trunk with a lid on it in the center of the boat. the pin or bolt for the keel is located there. Pull it and cut the winch cable and it is free. the mast has a bolt through the base; leave it in and unhook the cable from the chain plate on the bow and have a helper there to walk in down to the rear of the boat, then unhook the remaining cables and pull the bolt from the base. not much there and I doubt the keel is lead; most of them are cast iron. Update went out there Friday evening picked up a riding mower and an all alum gazebo still have more to get car bumpers and a another riding mower.

Now for the boat:
The trailer is structurally sound just looks like hell. The boat is currently full of water on the inside. One of the trailer tires will need to be replaced in order to move it the land fill. So I'm charging $300.00 and they are going to get the tire fixed and ill be paying the tipping fee of $80.00 at the landfill. I will remove the mast, cleats and anything else worth anything. The sail and ruder are stored inside I will try and rehome those. So I should clear $220.00 + anything I can scrap or sell and I will have a boat trailer to sell as well.

This will be done in the next few weeks. I'll update as the job progress and start taking pics/video also.

I wouldn't do that job any less than a grand 1 (btw I demolish 30 plus boats a year) even if it's trailerable if it breaks down your s.o.l bearings fatigued metal near the tongue or any host.of structural failures can.lead you in.hot water

2 the keel will more than likely be concrete not lead

3 to cut fiberglass sucks its itchy as all hell

4 depending on what you cut it with as the fiberglass cools it will bind your blade

5 I missed the weight but that boats probably around 2800-3500 lbs

6 does the boat have a bathroom freshwater disposal is hazmat

7 be sure to drain all fluids and dispose properly

Update after taking the wheels off to get a good look at the hubs and fix one of the tires it revealed a rotted U bolt and leaf spring look like paper on one side. So I'm out until they come up with another options and more money. I'll follow up with anything new when and if it happens.

Salt water will do that to a trailer, have you used a hammer to tap the frame for weak spots. Don't be surprised if you find holes concealed with heavy layers of rust shale.

Yea we smacked the frame with a hammer and it's fine. I'm told the boat has only seen fresh water. The issue was caused by the tire going flat and it was parked in an area that is sandy and over the years allowed the axel on that side to be on the ground as the tire sank into the sand.

Looked into renting a larger trailer than what I own figure we I cut it in half and make two trips. Just have to find out how the landfill is going to charge it with two trips and pass that on to the owners with a new quote for doing it. See if they bite, but think we are in the 4/5 hundred range now.

Just hire a boat mover and be done with this job already.


Any commercial boat mover would love this job, a boat on the hard no waiting for high tide, probably set you back a couple hundred plus the tipping fee at the landfill.

Preparing the boat for the big day, remove the trailer leaving the boat propped in an upright possition the boat mover will back his customised trailer under the hull then transport it to the landfill.

Sirscrapalot - Fully stocked coolers are like bacon, they go with anything.

So I got them to $450.00 and they are paying the dumping fees and are working around my schedule. So yesterday I cut the boat up took just over 3 hours. And next Friday I'm off from regular job so I'll load it and take it to the landfill. Here is a 5 min video of the demolition and some pics at the end as the camera ran out of battery. I'll record the loading and dumping trip and post next weekend.

Thanks. I did do a lot of thinking about how to go about cutting it up. In the beginning I was using battery sawsazall but then switched over to a corded one once all 8 of my battery's were dead. Most of the demo I used a fine tooth metal cutting blade worked best on the fiberglass and then a rough wood demo blade for the wood ribs inside.

If the keel is lead u could melt that down and sell it on ebay.

Honestly I'm not sure about the keel, I know it was 5 hundred pounds or more and magnetic at least on the out side ill drill it and see if its lead filled. I was trying to stay focused on the fiberglass side of the job. In my head the metal is a separate job; Mast, Trailer, Keel, Cleats and misc. items.

In the exact situation about a year ago, was very simple and came out smelling like around 700$ and made a pretty penny with the lead. Wasnt offered anything for boat and trailer.i called the landfill and talked with the manager, you see they have to break the boat up to put in the landfill. He told me to come on sat(when its pretty slow there). They used the excavator and broke it up, i brought a couple of sheets of plywood, put them on the trailer and they put the whole keel on the trailer and that was that.(it busted the keel up so bad i could pull it apart without hardky having to use the sawzall) Went to a guy south of town that smelts alluminum and lead(he makes fishing weight like a previous member suggested) sold him the lead. Then sprayed the trailer with a product called Osfo( i believe thats how its spelled) buffed it with a wire wheel, painted it and got 700 a couple weeks later. Took w weeks to sell the trailer but it was worth 2 days work
