Unhappy Too Much Junk On Ebay

Whenever I pickup e-junk, I end up with extra "stuff" people don't want. If it has any value I usually attempt to sell it on Ebay before I scrap or donate it.
As of late, I have had a larger than normal backlog of "stuff" on Ebay that is not selling, even though I have the lowest prices

I need to start being more picky about what I list !

Your spot on too muich junk on eBay, i recently purchased a Burndy Hydraulic crimper used on overhead power lines where the copper at the watherhead at the house connects to utility company aluminum coming in from the street.

Seller claimed the unit worked, so I purchased it $188.00 USD plus shipping to Canada, when it arrived found that it was leaking oil all over the place and did not as claimed work. Dumpster fodder this seller had picked up selling on ebay leaving it up to the customer to check it out if it works of not.

The sellers ad on ebay was well written in clear English, during our communication seller came accross as a backwoods inbred hick, much to his surprise Ebay now insists that the seller supply a return shipping label.for returns. Possibly this only apply's to those who have a consistancey with bad sales with returns.

We waited for the return label which never arrived, eventually was refunded for both my purchase and shipping.

Also borrowed a crimper from a buddy who is an elctrician, my 200 amp upgrade is almost completed just finnishing up on some inside wiring upgrades.

I had purchased this crimper through my better half's ebay account, in the first ebay communication they had commented on her lenght of time that she has been a member, 2002 active as both seller and buyer without incident.

Good to see eBay finally weeding out the bad eggs.

I can tell you that Ebay mandates every seller to pay return shipping. Like it or not.. another slant against sellers sadly!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

that is correct...if you agree to a refund or the mediation with Ebay goes in the buyers favor, you are required to pay for return shipping and refund. If no shipping label is sent (sometimes it is better NOT to lose more money by shipping the **** stuff back within 7 or 10 days (can't remember). you are auto refunded and the money taken from the seller's PayPal account.

You as a seller can fight and win...I have won 3 of the 4 (and the 4th I agreed on the return and refund) I have had to do...only because my descriptions is EXTREMELY accurate, I put the proper selling type (usually parts/non working for alot of my cell phones that are damaged), and I have a VERY thorough set of policies that I list with each listing.

Glad you got the money bad with minimal hassle.
PROFIT is made when you BUY/ACQUIRE NOT when you sell

I haven't delved too much into ebay. I tried selling two late 70's early 80's check writing machines and really got burned on the shipping. Lost $30 between the two and had to refund one because it got destroyed in transit and I neglected to pay for insurance. Trying to save the extra couple bucks I ended up loosing it all. I am currently trying to sell an early 90's training ATM (bankers used it to show customers how to use an ATM) and although I have 1 watcher and 60 hits, no one wants to pony up and make a bid. Luckily for me if it sells I put $35 shipping on it because I am not getting burned again. Oh well, I'll stick with scrapping and probably avoid ebay for the most part.

Almost everything I sell, the shipping makes up 50% - 80% of the price!
I wish I could get decent shipping prices in this area !

On a side note: I did manage to sell a checkbook cover off of a calculator recently ... and made $0.72 in profits !

RLS: Maybe you are attempting to sell the "wrong things" possibly.
Anything Large or bulky.. really needs to try and be sold locally.

If it is large and heavy- get it weighed, packaged and price out your shipping before you list the auction. If you have a Desktop PC tower as an example, pack it and put it in the box.. get it weighed and look at your shipping options. Usually stuff like that would go ground, if it costs $47.67 to ship it, list you item and put the shipping cost in the auction, or choose the dimensions and weight and it will be determined automatically by Ebay with the bidders shipping destination.

If you have small items.. do the same, get that weight and shipping cost before the auction even starts. That way if it sells you are making $ on your item, and not worrying that the shipping cost is going to eat into your profits!

The refund is not the issue, it's the non working junk that I received which caused a prolonged delay in my electrical upgrade project.

As for me I've been an ebay member for 18 years, with well over 1000 feedback to my credit I have a new policey in which I no longer leave feedback. All I can say is that I wished I had started this practice much sooner of my most recent sales a total of 25 or therabouts one fellow left a positive while the rest of my buyers left none.

IMHO feedback is akin to collecting air miles which we all know from the news have a limited life, in addition the data collected used to interject unwanted google adds into my browsing. Using an add blocker some sites will disallow you from entering the site unless you make some sort of monitary commitment.WTF is the web comming to.

Years ago I told my freind Bill that our access to the internet wouild be free as the advertisers would glady pay to have acces to the majority but I can see that my prediction bears no fruit. Advertisers expect me to pay for my Internet access from which they piggy back my service stealing my bandwidth to plague me with unwanted adds.

Blocking adds is not enough, these adds amounts to theft of yours and mine bandwidth someone should initiate a class action suit. Why is it that the advertisers get free use of a service I'm paying for, if I were to set up a web server or an email server my ISP is surly going to charge additionally for the extra bandwidth used.

Blocking ads can cut network traffic 25% to 40%, study shows

RLS: I took a gander through your completed auctions. Please take this as kind advice and in no way a slam on you.

When you sell $4, $6 and $10 items and offer free shipping. After Ebay takes 10% of the Final Value Fee, Paypal takes another 3% and you then pay for shipping. I can easily see how you would be frustrated.

You are offering Free Shipping on every item- and I understand it- believe me. I can sell a $50 item with Free Shipping and it will likely sell. I could sell the exact same item for $40 plus $10 shipping and you rarely get a sold item. People's mindset is odd. They think "Wow I get free shipping" but most can't do basic math.

Look to find higher dollar items. I refuse to sell anything that I can't make a MINIMUM of $20 profit after fee's and me eating the postage.

I sell quite a few computer power supplies. I look them up on the Sold Listings. If they sell for $14.99 with Free Shipping- they get scrapped. It just isn't worth the effort, and hassle to list, pack, ship, box, go to the post office, and then hope for "no returns" on something I will make $4 profit on. Is $4 more than scrap rate- sure.. but I'd have to sell quite a bit to make my millions!

I'd agree with you, however Ebay's rolled feedback and affinity into one thing and openly tells buyers to look at both. That both reflect on how good a seller is. I generally don't comment until the buyer comments first, because once you leave a comment you can't take it back or change it. Hope things pick up for you.

I buy a lot on eBay. I stopped selling a couple of years ago. I used to sell cars on there but towards the end, people would bid and never pay, in fact after the fourth time I stopped selling on there. Ebay called me offered to let me run for free, but I declined. eBay has gone way down the hill. Craigslist is starting to go down hill but is not there yet. I love buying on CL.

Depends on the area - the one local to me here is still 50/50 but the one where I was staying in Iowa was really good. Had a contract with Coilcraft up there because of CL.

THIS IS GOLD....anything mailed is expensive unless you do ALOT of it...just sell the parts, not the whole thing. Unless it is worth alot, then heavy items make ZERO SENSE to sell....case in point...almost EVERY SINGLE battery backup or full server...shipping far outweighs the value to the customer. I take those apart and only sell the valuable pieces...rest goes to local scrap yard (well power supplies I save and take when I take some other more valuable stuff to my semi local buyer.

actually the ads for most of these websites doesn't hit their servers at all...for instance, google ads are served outside the server from google directly.....ie it costs me NOTHING to serve up ads on a site (unless I AM doing it locally on page, but I will be making ALOT more per ad than google ads, so the minimal bandwidth more than pays for itself). I mean websites DO have to make a profit somehow...ads being the way to do it...and while they can be INVASIVE and crappy, ad blockers make these sites unprofitable, hence people won't want to run them....just telling the other side of the story. I for one, NEVER ran crappy bandwidth hog ads nor those Fing auto play/flash/shockwave BS that crashes your browser.

this is also why people can put videos on their site with ZERO impact...they are hosted for free at VIMEO or youtube and the code4 in your site streams it from THEM, not your server. I could make a site right now with every single scrapping videos that is worth a SH$% for instance...and it would be TINY...you would hammer the videos all day long...I would not care. I would just serve ads all around the embedded video and get paid everytime, no matter if it was my video or not.

Just giving some insight for those that are unfamiliar with how that works. I am actually building 2 websites now...one to show people how to save and make money on the web and the other will feature "the best geek gifts" you can buy for your favorite "geek"...cool stuff.

IT DOES suck about the delay for your project though...I hate that for you.

It is these very ads your speaking of that eat up bandwidth on the consumers end, data packages for mobile devices are very limited with the customer paying exorbitant prices for every meg used over quota, No matter how you look at it, it;s theft of my bandwidth.

For instance these websites your building, if I or others were to hotlink to your graphics using them for my own purposes you would claim that I was stealing from your server bandwidth, which would be true.

You would be sure to impliment proceedures to prevent others from hotlinking just as I use ad blockers to prevent unauthorised use of my bandwidth.

For personal reasons I no longer use photobucket or any other image hosting service, but have rather choosen to hotlink images used in my posts on the various forums I belong to. Yes I'm guilty, but the few killobytes used before the thread beciomes aged amounts to a grain of sand on the beach.

I wasn't disagreeing about YOUR bandwidth being used when these ads are shown...you are certainly correct. I do still maintain that most websites have to make money somehow to be viable (otherwise whats the point), so the only option they have is ads to pay the bills. It's not a great solution, but pretty much the only one short of charging access to the sites info (which about ZERO people would pay, they would just click to another site). I get around "limited" data plans by being on wifi about 95% of the time. Yes, I know many people live in areas that are more remote and that doesn't work...unfortunately I cannot help the choice of living in a remote area. If I can't have high speed internet and be close to stuff, I won't live there.

Hotlinking is certainly an issue, but most sites have the code to prevent that...many sites are built with wordpress (mine are for simplicity of maintenance) and there are tools to prevent that for free. Any professional site generally would have that (or should). I only embed things that have permission (youtube allows you to turn the embed feature on and off...but you generally would allow it if you are participating in the revenue ad sharing with youtube since ANY showing gets you ad $$$ as it is embedded in the video itself).

I was just pointing all that out for people that maybe didn't know how alot of this stuff works.

All you points were valid and I understand your position completely. All that being said, website owners still need to make a living or at least pay for the thing...unfortunately ads are the reality of how that works. It is a bit of a toll vs having to pay to access every single website out there we want to read information on.
