    Making More Money Now

I was sharing the news of this years low iron prices with the local coffeeshop boys and how I got a whopping $47 for a load of shred at the scrapyard 100 miles down the road. It was based on $50 a ton so of course I didn't quite have a ton. Price has fallen another $10 since then and a local scrapper told me today that it's going down yet another $10 next week.

Anyhow, the advice I got from all the geniuses at the coffeeshop was this:

If you're losing money, get a bigger truck. So I traded off the 04 Dodge for a 08 Diesel and now I can expect my profits to increase.
    Right ?

I would adapt and change to higher margin items...ie ewaste.

    WRONG.

I find that the boys at the coffee shop are generally spot on. If they say you need a bigger truck, then by-god you need a bigger truck. If they say the fish one of them caught was a walleye that was darn-near a state record, you can take that to the bank. If they say it's going to be a mild winter in North Dakota, put your parka away.

    Just my experience.
Money is not the root of all evil, the love of money is.

I did that last winter and took a whole pickup load of e-waste to a buyer and the check must have gotten lost in the mail.....lotsa feet draggin' going on there. I think I don't like e-waste now. It was a learning experience but I tend to throw whole computers in the shred loads now. . . . and I'm not even looking for shred. I used to give half of the take but am telling everyone now that I'll only take it for free. In this farming community, when prices are this bad, most heavier equipment and vehicles will just be left to set in the back forty. It's the refrigerators, absentee owner garage cleanouts, bicycles, tin etc.......something that is in someone's way that is free for the taking.

then you need to use some of our buyers on here...I use Ewasted for most of my stuff. NEVER EVER had an issue...even when a small issue happened, they fixed it, ASAP. They have like 50 pages of reviews...and they pay the most I have found for most things.

Anyways, YMMV with ewaste like anything else. I do not know your market. Good luck though!

We purchase laptop computers and many components for greater than scrap value. We offer a shipping reimbursement program.replies

You're losing a ton of money if you're throwing computers in the shred pile. Shed is going below $50/Ton. Computer RAM is over $10 per pound. You can fit $400 worth of RAM in the large flat rate box, ship it for less than $20, and be paid within two weeks of sending. I've used Ewasted too- he's really a great buyer. But, we have others too....

By maximizing E-Waste finds (Especially more than scrap items), you can afford that larger truck! With shred, even my 1986 Dodge would never have paid itself off.

YM- Did you ever get paid for your boards and such? I was going to pm you a few days back for an update and I haven't checked with our other mutual friend if he finally got a check or not. If not, so much for the local buyer, you all gave him enough chance to come through and he used the rope to hang himself. Save any more computers you get and if you and the band have a gig close by here sometime this winter, I'll buy 'em cash on the barrel head that day. I like tearing them apart

Rog, I never got paid and I have to attempt a contact with the person (a previous SMF buyer). The check could be lost in the mail for all I know. I don't trust the mail anymore as that kind of thing goes on all the time. . . . . . but I DO sense a repetitious cycle with that buyer.

Some of the computers I've received have been relieved of their essential parts ahead of time. Overall, my experience with e-waste left a bad taste in my mouth (and my pocketbook) so that's why they went in the shred pile. As for the band, we'll be in Mitchell for New Year's Eve and back at Grand Falls Casino on Feb 21st. At the present, I don't have any computers but I'll probably acquire some by then and will let you know.

Instead of getting a bigger truck, why not get a bumper pull 16ft flatbed trailer with rails? It is more versatile, it is cheaper, and you can carry so much more in it? Not to mention carry larger items you may come across that cannot fit in a truck? I have one, and have carried as much as 2 1/2 tons of stuff on it. Was a nice payday with that load as the prices were higher then.

i was told last week when i brought a junk car in. (not even worth my time) that they don't plan on prices coming back up till least march some time.
when i took mine in it was around $33 a ton. got maybe $70 and that was with cutting off the cat.

I hear ya, Wayne. I do have two trailers (16ft and a 20ft) and load the bigger stuff with my skidsteer. I've had over 4 ton on my car trailer (two 3500 lb axles). Overloaded to say the least, but only did that once. I'd have never believed it would haul a threshing machine if I hadn't done it. Was only about 2 1/2 ton with the axles off. There's alot of self-sarcasm in my posts BTW ....LOL

Yukon, I like the big trucks because I also do hauling and auto transport, but they are great when I get huge scrap buys like chiller units and other things, but I have a saying. - the bigger the truck, the bigger the buck - don't get that the wrong way... It has two meanings.. The bigger the truck, the bigger the potential and capability of making more money... But the tires cost more, the oil changes are more, the registration/insurance is more, blah blah so on and so on. If this isn't a full time gig, you need to find the happy medium to justify the new truck (unless you are just tired of the old vehicle and just want a nice comfy new vehicle and looking for a good excuse) lol. Because that's where I was. I needed a new truck and got bigger and bought an 08 F450 but my employee drives it and I'm still in my 96 powerstroke... But I also usually get to drive my medium duties and semis so that makes me happy but I want a nicer truck to daily drive and pull my trailer with.

Sorry for the jumble, but a trailer is a great way to go. 14-16' is very maneuverable in all environments and you can beat up a 2000 dollar trailer and not feel bad about it. But I do have to say that that Chevy in your pictures isn't a base model, that's the "do work" edition haha
