Not a banner weekend, but a few good scores... Probably the most unusual find was this huge chunk of coral I got from the first sale I stopped at. I know nothing about coral and it might be illegal to sell, but I took a chance. He said a diver friend collected it over thirty years ago. I paid $12 for it. I am going to list it on CL to see if I get any bites. It is amazing and it rings like porcelain if struck. I think it would be a bit iffy to try to ship it...

The next items I got were a bunch of silver plate items. I haven't weighed them yet. They are brass except for the small creamer and sugar thingies which are plated copper.

Another sale I got two UPS with the batteries in them... $1 for both...

A freebie trash sink I am going to give a shot on CL...

    Now for the personal keepers...

I got an antique Hudson brand bug duster and a copper? brass? antique pressure release valve that will make their way to the museum cabinet. Simple things that will just be interesting to look at.

I posted about going to see the eclipse and I wanted a welding helmet to be able to look at the eclipse and maybe take a pic with my camera. I got lucky and found two for $5. After the eclipse, I will list them on ebay....

Then there was the curbco pick. Someone put a nice bird bath out for the trash and it is an upgrade from the one I have in front of our front windows. The one that previously occupied the spot will be listed on CL for ahhh, $30, and I'll take $25. All in all, not so bad. I think I will be able to stick a few bills into the garage sale purse.

Found some scrap today... I am a little ethically torn, but it is what it is. I went to a sale and saw a pile of silverplate on a table that I started to look at. They felt really light and I asked if they were metal as I was examining them with my magnifying glass. On the bottom they were stamped "STERLING". He asked me if they were metal and I said, "yes". I asked what he wanted for them and he said $2. I did not haggle. 8.8 OZ Sterling silver... Is it wrong to not offer up information I am aware of? 8.8 X 17 X .92 = $138.80... Not bad for $2

Don't sweat the ethics too much. I figure that if they don't know what they have then that's on them.

A few years ago when fitbits were still new and all the rage, we found one at a yard sale. My wife wanted it and it didn't have a price so I asked how much. Guy says it belonged to his Mom and she didn't like the way it fit so $5. The retail on them at that time was at least $150.

I also got a nice little gem (lapidary) grinder at the same sale for $10 I think. I sold that on ebay for a real nice profit.

So don't sweat it just because their "precious" metals. I mean that is the whole purpose of going to yard sales, right?
Copper, brass, and Leather. 3 of my favorite things.

I try not to reveal too much info when it comes to this kind of stuff. If the seller isn't going to have the sense to know what exactly it is that they are selling, then they don't deserve to know that they just lost a HUGE profit. That's my rule of thumb...

I am amongst friends here. I have let sellers know in the past and upped the sale price.

I got this today, also. I believe I overpaid...

Update: I got another silver dish (3.3 oz) in a batch of silverplated for scrap. Brings the total to 12.2 oz silver mixed with plated for $5 scrap copper and brass. $190 at $17/oz.

What do you do with the silverplate, I assume you take it to the yard? Do you have to file or grind it to expose the base metal first? Just curious as I always see a ton of it for sale.

You are doing awesome this weekend. I stopped at three sales today and came home empty handed

I use a file to remove the plating to see what the base metal is and sort accordingly. A lot of people price it like it is silver, I buy it so I can make money scrapping it.

Well, I think I got a Boo-Ya deal. I bought two Verizon MiFi Jetpack hotspots for $2 each a couple weeks ago. I just got down to charging them up and testing them out and it appears neither one has been removed from the accounts they were associated with. I was going to use one and associate it with my account and sell the other, but I think I will ride their data for as long as I can get away with it...

I know, I am a bad bad man....

Got a coupe of cool things today. One is just a nifty wall hanging bought for the wifey. She likes to play cribbage and we play with her relatives when we get together. I guess you could call this a crib board for the hard of seeing...

The other thing I found is a couple of swords. I know nothing about them but I made an offer and it was accepted. I will probably see if anyone here has any insight into what I actually have before I list on ebay or CL. I am thinking of asking $150 for the musketeer sword and $200 for the Japanese sword.

Ran across this yesterday. It is not something I would normally pick up, but that seems to be the stuff that surprises me. It had a bit of tarnish on it but I cleaned it up and it looks really good. I have it listed on ebay.

Sadly, no. I bought it because it looked cool, but I had a pretty good idea it was just plated. It did polish up nicely, though.

The caddy sold on e-bay for $59.99.not bad.

Today... Dropped by this one sale and thee was a collection of torches and welding gear. I wanted it all, but I don't know how to weld, and he wanted $150 for it all. Tried $100 but no luck. Another guy was looking at it. He was a little iffy on it so I asked what he was interested in. He said he was interested in it all. I said I wanted the torch set and thought maybe he would be interested in splitting it if he wanted the welder and welder gear. He thought for a second and said that would be good. So, he got a Mig or Tig, I don't know(but it did come with two argon tanks). I got an acetylene bottle and an oxygen bottle (I do not know if they have gas) and a cutting torch head (that was what I was after) as well as some other tips and another body. I have not gone through and done the total inventory yet. I think I did okay for $75.

Yeah you did pretty well on that torch deal especially if you got some life left in those tanks.
I payed 150 for mine got the caddy and two torches but only 2 tips, Had to buy a guage as one wasn't reading right but those are cheap.
It's never too late to learn a new skill, even begginers can spit enough metal welding to hold simple non weight bearing things together (me)

Well, another garage sale week and I picked up some goodies. Win Office 2003-$1, Quicken personal and bidnus-$1, a cell phone $0.25, a dog cage, a bunch of silver plate... But the big winner was an antique hutch. It was in decent shape with a couple of dings that had to be fixed to make it really nice to sell. It is really cool and I was looking at it and thinking how nice it was. I know the man selling it from yard sales (he sells and I also see him at other sales), and he comes over and starts talking to me about it. He is talking to me trying to convince me I need it. I'm like, "not so much," but we are friendly with each other so we are chatting it up. We finally turn around to head back to his sale and he tells me he can let it go for $30... I'm like, "Dam you Jim!" So there I am driving away with the hutch on my trailer....

I spent the day farting around with it and I got it ready to list. I made two miraculous saves on the dings on it. You can see the new dowel I trimmed to duplicate the beaded moulding that was missing. You cannot even tell I made the repair...

The next repair was harder and I was not sure I could ace it, but I figured I couldn't make it any worse (It was not bad considering the piece, but it was pretty bad considering the piece). A big hunk of the veneer had been chipped off and it was a shame to have the divot on the piece. Well, I took a piece of cabinet ply I had from a job and drove my drywall knife down to peel off the layer of veneer. I cut it out with a utility knife and hand sanded it down to match the thickness of the veneer on the cabinet. I glued it on and rebuilt the accent line up the front. Stained it and put a coat of polyurethane on it. It came out way better than I thought it would. I aced it!

Well, it has been a really sweet CL sales week. I sold the hutch for $225 and $20 to deliver. I also sold the Peroni sign for $200 (I paid $12, but I really liked it hanging in my shop).
