Nice Find t00nces2 !! I'd like to do garage sale'ing, too .. I am sure there are many great finds just waiting out there.

Honestly, I'd really like to get into the storage locker buying business, you know when people stop paying rent and they auction off the lockers? But, I'd probably need a resale shop or at a minimum a storage locker of my own. The wife isn't to excited about me wanted to bid on defunct storage lockers for the treasures they might, or might not, contain. It seems by going to yard sales, you get to pick through the "storage locker" and walk away with what will make you the most money.

    Nice find t00nces2

You have an ample supply of these??

I was trying to find a video clip (hobo finds can you help out) of Jake Blue picking up his "personal property" from Frank Oz after getting out of prison early in Blues Brothers. It may fit in here....

I got two brass urns today for $6, they weigh 8+ pounds each. I also got a very cool brass fireplace screen that looks like a peacock fan that weighs 12 pounds for $5. If I don't keep it I will probably give it a shot to sell on CL or eBay. I got three old cigarette tins yesterday for $1 each The wifey likey likey!. Those were my smokin' finds for this week.

I was planing to have a yard sale today, but have a Halloween party to go to tonight, so I got over ruled by a 2 to 1 vote. I have had two yard sales earlier this year, both were profitable (more than scrap prices), and a way to get rid of my constantly accumulating "inventory". I also find that a yard sale is a good way to network with other scrappers and people who have scrap they need gone!

I found some brass today for scrap. It sweetened a deal for me I was already going to jump on. I paid $40 for the 5 pounds of brass pictured...

    [/url]

I am a bit of a rock hound and I saw the chunk of petrified wood at a yard sale. He wanted $40 and I knew that was a really good price for a hunk of PW. It was a 50 pound chunk. This is amazing!...

So you got BOTH the petrified wood and the brass for $40, right?? I'm a little dense today, the cold has affected by brain...

P.S. garage/rummage sales are a distant memory right now

He said he got it from his grandfather who told him he got it from out west. I did a search on ebay and it looks like it could easily be worth $400-$500 and possibly more. I think it will be an interesting visual addition to my garden area.

That rock is awesome. I rent so it would certainly be on eBay already if I had my hands on that for the price you paid. Too cold here for garage saling here when the weather breaks it'll be game on!

A week ago I went to a sale and there was a box of silver plate items. It said to make an offer, so I offered $5. The offer was accepted and I threw the lot in my truck. When I got home I weighed the box and I had gotten 18 lbs of silver plated brass for my $5 (not a bad score0. Fast forward to today. I am picking through the brass and knocking off the zinc handles and feet and checking for sterling. Well, it just so happens that thrown in with the plated was a sterling plate. Weighs out to 8+ oz. Ding! Ding! Ding! I figure it has to be worth at least $80

Nice score!! Are all silver plated flatware made of brass? I know that some of the platters are brass, some are nickel and occasionally copper.

I believe most silver flatware is plated brass, use your trusty magnet. In my opinion, flatware is not worthwhile because you cannot get it cheaply enough as you would have to get it for free or as a bonus to another buy.

Don't forget auctions, I work for a guy who does auctions and estate sales. So I get first crack at stuff and whatever doesn't sell I wind up with whatever I want .

Well, today was a brass day! I got a few odds and ends, but the big score was brass. 32 pounds for $9 It was actually a little more, but the cruise director picked some items out for decorations aboard the USS t00nces2. I also got three mini USB chargers for the phones, a wall mount for a small LCD TV ($2), a small stainless lock blade knife ($0.25), a five pound box of 6x2" screws ($3), a set of Craftsman Torx wrenches with the hole ($3), and a small, throwaway charcoal grill for a tailgate at the Bad Co/Joe Walsh show ($1).

All in all, it was a good weekend... I made more than I bought. The garage sale purse is always hungry for more garage sale money.

I enjoyed the term "cruise director". I just refer to her as the "BOSS" Mike

using "my queen" anywhere in a sentence seems to diffuse most of those "oh sh!t" moments for me LoL

t00nces2- You rock!!! You should team up with a guy from my trapping forum named trappintime. Very different environments (he lives in very rural east-central Alberta) but you guys both make fantastic deals!!!

I think your success on garage/rummage/yard sales comes from a variety of things, 1) you know the value of things and what you're looking for, 2) your live in an area that's past a certain threshold of population of having lots of stuff for sale. This doesn't explain trappintime's successes but he has a lot of "down time" from his main gig (spraying crops during the growing season) so I think he uses that time to find deals, 3) you live in an area where such sales happen nearly year around. During the cold months its mostly just the thrift stores for me although there are on-line rummage threads the whole year so maybe its more a matter of time for me to find more gems for re-selling. The 9-5 keeps the household running and that takes priority.

Anyway, nice scores and keep on keeping on!!!
