How Many off us are E-Stewards or R-2 Certified Electronic Recyclers ????????

My minds starting to churn, thinking of starting the process,
Cannot find any companies within 200 miles from me according to there data,
the up front costs are there but the rewards are also there.

be ready to spend about 20 grand or so depending on how long they say they "need" to be out there to check into everything. I have heard it costing less and it costing much more. We are going to be doing it shortly it looks like for account I could pick up but I would stand off on doing it for as long as you can unless you have account that is asking for it that is will worth the costs and the headache.

Remember all FM items will have to be full downstream and counting plastics and CRT glass....there is alot of things you will not be able to do as you can now.

Even a coffee maker can't go to the scrap yard due to it being counted as a "item has FM's inside of it"

Also the yearly costs for the R2 and audits and everything else that is wrapped up in it.

    (huge insurance bill to...)

Ha Easy you bring up valid points, but let me just say it this way, in the scope of it all the costs are not really to bad, and the costs can be spread out if you need over the certifying process. I am looking at the big picture and I believe it's sooner than later for all states will have to install federal guide lines for e-scrap. The electronic manufactures have already started to include recycling costs in the price of new equipment. And all the big box stores are using only certified recyclers I have heard. It's just smart business and putting it of will only cost you more in the long run. A short little story, I have a friend located in Miami, a couple of years ago he had the smarts to become a certified EPA location for recycling of fluorescent lite bulbs, let's just say in a couple of short years he has done extremely well for him self. The days of burning the installation off wire in a 55 gallon drum fire over nite are over. Just my .02.

True but you have to take into account can you afford the added insurance you have to have under the R2 (can cost over a grand a month if not more depending on who you go with...there insurance requirements have gone up in the new R2 that has rolled out) also can you afford the yearly costs? Keep up with the book keeping, limiting the scrap you get in that you don't have the downstream for? Do you have a 100% recycle program in (under R2 nothing can go to trash/landfill) do you have the gear required to format/kill the hard drives and the man power to do it [also all programs needed for phones, printers, flash cards and ect]

Becoming R2 is not easy and very costly so you have to look at it...can I spend blank....do I have client base here that would care?

I've talked to a buyer on here who is R-2 certified, and to the costs to start and maintain are steep as Easy said. I know you do commercial AC units, among other things I'm sure, but do you have the supply to justify the cost? I'm obviously not R-2 certified or an E-steward but have researched and studied it extensively, and only have hopes of doing so in the future. I'm just starting an LLC, and personally could not afford nor justify the cost of said certifications, but what can you afford? Do you have the supply to maintain and make a healthy profit? My guess is that if you've considered the costs associated, then you probably have the supply or means of getting it. Either way I wish you the best of luck and keep us up to date.

Easy again thank you for the valid points that you brought to,the discussion, let me just say that after twenty five years in the recycling business in all fazes I am in a position that let's just say that I would not miss any meals or change my life style in any way, that being said, I see the real growth in the recycling industry is in e-scrap, not to mention the cost of one excavator for a scrap yard would be more than the entire total investment required to move to the next level in the e-scrap business. I started this thread to basically play devils advocate with some one that has gone thru the entire process,I have always tried to look outside the box in all my business endeavors, and it has worked for me. If you guys don't see the big picture here it's just a matter to time before it becomes a regulated industry, just look at the regulations that have been put into place in that, the scrap metal yards are being forced to police the industry in the last year or two the business is changing and you must change with it, the big box stores and the manufactures will seek out certified recyclers not because they want to but because they have to, I don't want to seem arrogant but I have read a few members say that there customers don't care, or they have never been asked if they are certified, while there are customers like that those are not the kind to build a business with foundation around.

Well Dude80 let me just say that there are big differences in being certified and not certified the biggest one is that large telecom company's, banks, hospitals, and many many different institutions and business seek out certified recyclers where there
Company's liabilities end, and the recyclers begin.
It's all about covering there tails as far as security issues and hazardous waste is concerned, I can be pretty much be guaranteed like any other company that has the insurance and certifications of a steady flow of material, just being on there website and having the real credentials separates the real deal and the pretenders.

Me personally I like flying under the radar and when the scrap industry becomes as regulated as you think it will be I'll just retire with the money I have made being "uncertified"......LOL

yeah...just read the document above and actually had looked (VERY BRIEFLY after seeing all the BS involved) in certifications....ummm...they will have to drag me KICKING and SCREAMING even when I get a bit more size to my operations.....some of that is complete BS and really a way to just make money from the certs. NOW, that being said, I DO handle all my stuff in the correct manner. I don't send stuff to the dump etc...I pull anything that is feasible, HOWEVER, it is just as economically feasible for me to send say a printer skeleton with metal AND plastic to my scrap yard...they will grind it up and use a eddy current separator or similar to separate plastic from metal etc....I am not going to spend that extra time when that is what they are doing anyways.

I don't need a certification to be"official"....YES I know you are a much larger operation 1956, and kudos if you have the $$$ and the patience to put up with that level of BS. I will police my downstream to an extent, but not to the extent they are asking..it would take an ENORMOUS amount of time and energy and I am here to make money, not follow where the plastic or whatever ended up...that is for the govt agencies to do with those larger processors. They have to justify their jobs somehow. LOL

Anyways, the only way I would ever do something like this is a ROI situation...and it would have to be a REALLY good ROI, not just kinda good. I have plenty of consumer stuff I can get vs military or big box (heck no one here could compete with the REALLY large well funded boys at the top of the chain that your stuff ends up with anyways for those contracts). Oh, and I ALREADY have hospital contracts and other businesses....and I am just getting started in that market.

I have NEVER ever been a proponent of "certs"...they just are their to make your life harder and make you spend money. You can do 80-90% of the stuff they want without the 10-20% BS they require because they are the same as any other govt agency...bloated and designed to make it impossible to run a really profitable business. IMO of course.

Good luck with it....I will just keep finding the bigger boys that will accept the weird stuff and make headways into those markets (like paper, plastic, clothing, drywall or any number of other things out there) and leave the certs.

First off you dont have to be R2 certified to get a client who wants it. All you have to do is use a company that is R2 certified to send that material too. Use them for the certs to get the clients that require it.

I have to say one of the most helpful suggestions for someone like me way too small to consider certifications. Thank you, Mike

All right Part time Scraper, you know that talking to me, my knowledge of the E-scrap business is in the beginning stages and the learning process has begun. But one thing I do know for certain is how to run a business and telling your customers where and who you sell to or let process there material will in the end not work out for you in the long run, it's just a matter of time that they realize you are just the middle man, I am not intending to scrutinize you or any one else on the SMF I just think that we all know if you are serious about being in the e-waste business you must get your own licenses and certifications I guess I am on a mission, when I start something I just throw myself into it hole hardy, the search has began I need a good compliance and certification company.

Agreed if you want to chase big contracts you will probably want these certifications.....If you want to stay small and make some money probably not.........I think it all comes down to what your goals are........

Bingo. It depends on who you're targeting.

We send our stuff to an R2 certified recycler. They're not hard to find. Just check the buyers section here.

We do not tell our clients about the location or name of the company, though. For small schools and hospitals around here, it works great. For the hospitals and businesses in Miami, the certifications may be more important. They probably are.
