When I pick up children's bicycles, if they are in ok condition, I put them in front of my house for sale. At $10 or $15 they usually are boughten in 1-3 days. I live on the main drag though.

I found this thread a interesting read. I have many hundreds of bicycles piled around the yard with most of them being the cheap made ones, but there are a few better then scrap ones in the mix. I got rid of the real old ones years back as that is better then letting them sit if you don't have a personal interest in them.

As for rims, they are most times just scrap after sitting outside for years and a cheap bike left outside over the winter and through the summer will have plenty of rust and the tires will be rotten.

I learned that a certain type of vintage bike chain can be found on some of the older chain drive garage door openers. I believe it was for some old British bicycles. I mention it as the right size chain is worth a bit and a garage door opener has many feet of it. It's called skip tooth chain.

Rims from high end models could be magnesium, might be some interest in those who make fireworks.
