So, I bought some CRTs off of GovDeals....

As stated in the title, I bought a few CRT monitors from my local school system off of GovDeals. Okay, it was more than a few. It was 198. Seeing as this is Labor day weekend, I'm going to pick them up Tuesday and today I got an email from the head of the department of maintenance saying he has a few more he would throw in for the bid price of $7.35, no additional charge. I said sure, thinking 10 15 monitors. 2 hours later he sent me another email with the final count on them. They're giving me an additional 200 monitors just because I take them for free. I danced around my bedroom like a fool, wife laughing, dogs participating. On another note, I have a LOT of work in front of me.

I asked about it in another thread and I was graciously clued in by Sirscrapalot as to a yard in my state that takes them. Unfortunately the yard is bout 3 hours away so it might be a struggle getting over there. I can wait though, because I inherited the property on which I had my house built and there are two perfectly serviceable chicken houses on it. However, I have no interest in raising chickens so you can guess what I use as storage. I'm thinking about putting up a wall in one to use as a cooled office/breakdown space because the front 30 ft of the chicken houses have a cement floor. I can then use window units that still work that I've gotten from scrapping to cool down/heat up that portion. Anywho, that was off track, but, No, I am not smashing/illegally disposing of them.

There is a non profit *cough bs cough* recycler near me that does not turn away anything. They found me and tried to recruit me as a "volunteer". I graciously declined. I did tell them that I will bring them all of the plastic and hazardous stuff they want (i do ocassionally leave a low grade board on something for them, why not? they're doing me a favor) right after the woman told me that they don't turn anything away, they just want to make sure it gets recycled properly.... I guess the moral of the story is, find someone like that.... around there

I always have fun with tv's. Money is money, an the break down fast an easy.

Mind you..I don't go looking for them, they tend to find me. lol.

For you guys who lack an outlet for glass, I dig it. For me..it all works out.

My problem with CRT TVs/Monitors is that they're so big and bulky and storage is an issue for us. Lots of effort for not that much cash...but if you had a ton of them and the time/space to deal with them PLUS a good way to dispose of the stripped units, yep I can see the benefit. The stars haven't aligned for me like that, though.

Kz, I'm using a 2000 F-250 and a dualaxle cattle trailer that I'm borrowing from my Father.

Mike, I've shoveled all of the loosest dirt out via Skid loader for storage purposes. After thinking about it further, I'll probably rent a warehouse in town when it comes time to open an official office/non-ferrous scrap and electronics waste depot.

I actually have an International 4900 (Read: About the largest truck I can get without carrying a CDL) that my Grandfather is selling me cheap. He is getting out of a business because he's 70 and he's too old to work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. He just did it as something to do so now he's basically giving the truck to me. I just have to learn to drive it. I've started taking CRTs for a fee of a dollar a piece. Most people are more than happy to pay it.

I would be worried that the second you get 400 CRTs the local yard will no longer allow you to dump glass these anymore causing a large financial headache disposing of them. Niche items can be a pain.

Agreed! My local goodwill will take the CRT monitors in any condition for the Dell Reconnect program.

They do however, charge for CRT TVs.

Hey, SteelMill, where are you and your giant pile of CRTs located? If you any some nice oldies in there, I might be interested in buying some -- or I might know someone in your area who would be. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find vintage CRTs to go with our vintage computers...
