This thread is just an overview of my scrapping adventures. I'll post pics of finds, teardowns, and other related activities.

TODAYS FIND: Pool pump, handle on top feels like it is broken. Anyone know if you can test the motor without water in it? It looks to be in decent shape, no broken off pieces or anything

DO NOT TEST WITHOUT WATER IN IT!
Pool pumps require water to flow through them or they will burn up!
You can do a quick plug in to see if it is not seized.. but don't run for more than a few seconds.

It is a SEALED motor where the spindle is- so it should not be able to seize unless it is dead!

Take your garden hose and twist off the top clear plastic "lid" and run a hose into it while you test. It is a nice motor- about $200 retail new! If it works You should easily net $50 bucks or better with spring right around the corner!!

That's what I figured, if my pool wasn't frozen I would just hook it up. But ya, just gonna do a quick plug in test.

The Filter portion of that set-up is called a "Diatomaceous earth" Filter- Since there is no metal inside of it- will you do me a favor and bash the SHAT out of it for me? I had one on my parents pool when I was a kid and it lasted my childhood and got a new lease on life at my current house before it sprung a leak straight out of the top of it. Taking all 16 (I think) nuts and bolts out of the top and cleaning the "fingers" inside was a nightmare.. When mine finally went I wanted it to DIE!

3-24-14 FIND: Took a 2 mile walk down and back on a dirt road in my town. Everything is starting to thaw so I couldn't drive farther up. Saw some targets and walked over and found all this. 7 silver and the rest brass. Woulda picked up shotgun shells but didn't have a bag.

Be aware of chlorine when picking up pool pump items. A while ago I had found parts of a pool filtering mechanism alongside the road and tossed it into the back of my pathfinder. Turns out it still had some wet chlorine tablets in it and I about gassed myself in the enclosed truck. Not a pleasant experience.

Saw this at the end of a driveway 2 houses up from my GF's. Knocked, the lady asked her husband about it, and he said its all yours. Sweet!!! Loaded it in her car (a small wagon) with it touching the rear hatch and about 2 inches from the radio. Broke it up into more manageable pieces (it was all 1 long piece) and it weighed in at 33 lbs. 1.8oz.

Most yards down solder bearing copper to #2. Cut the ends off sell as #2 sell the rest as#1.

TH350 Transmission disassembly. Tranny was shot, wouldn't work in any gears and got another for way cheaper than it woulda been to fix it.

Scrap pickup from my mother's house. Stuff I accumulated while living there but just been taking up space. Have more to get out of the woods once it dries up.(theres alot of smaller stuff on the bed floor)

Had a good drive to school, scored the outer ring of a rotted wagon wheel, water tank with fittings still on the bottom, and some light steel contraption.
Outer ring: 19.5 lbs
Tank fittings: 7.5 lbs Brass. 4 oz copper (didn't weight the tank before dropping in pile, Amazon shipping wt. is 69 lbs)
Steel thing: 15.5 lbs
Total: 85 lbs min. x $.09=$7.65 7.5lbs x $1.50=$11.25 = $18.90

Had a good drive both to and from work. Steel trays (29 lbs), roofing copper (4.5 lbs) and some fence (30 lbs). Also decided to break down the 3 smaller tv's and 2 monitors that have been taking up space.

Did a steel run to the yard today. Toolbox full of smaller stuff probably weighed around 350/400#. Loaded it myself, rolled it up on rims/water tank to get it to sit on rear of bed and then just backed up til it was almost straight up, got in the bed and just pushed down and it fell right in. Back is feeling it already from getting it onto the rims. 1120 lbs @ 180/GT

Probably my best curb find so far. 2004 or 2006 Craftsman LT2000 with a Kohler 17.5HP. Needed a battery (I had 1 from a scrap mower), adjusted the carb linkage, and it runs and mows great now! Just need to re attach the right front deck mount with a cotter pin. Even came with a full tank of gas!
