Full time Cable Guy. Part time Scrapper. What got me started

So I thought it might be fun to share the story about how I got involved in the scrapping world. I started about two and a half years ago. That's when I started working for the cable company. At that time all I knew about scrapping was that copper and aluminum were worth money. In the mornings at the shop I notice people just throwing away tons of phone cords, ground wire, coax, remotes and tons of stuff like that. I didn't know exactly what to do with it but I started grabbing anything I could. I company gave me permission, they actually thought it was funny. I spent six months just bringing all this stuff home and dumping it I the garage. One day my girlfriend got fed up and told me that I had to do something with it or trash it. Mind you by this point my garage was filled end to end. I still had no clue what to do.. I took to facebook and found out my cousin was working for a scrap yard a few hours away. So he came down for a three day weekend. He took me through it all. How to tell whats what. We started by putting all the coax right in my truck.. 4 loads at about 400 pounds each. then we started separating the rest. power cords and supplies, comm wire, ground wire and non wire stuff (remotes, modems, computers.. Took me two weeks to strip down the ground wire and power cords. It was a tough lesson. Now I stay on top of it. Still have and amazing honey hole in my job.

that awesome and whats funny is a lot of us look for cable/sat people to get scrap from since there is so much wasted money in that industry I am glad to see your putting it to good use and your girl will be happy when you buy her something nice or take her out to dinner but remember love/addiction of scrap comes first lol

So faction, is most of what you bring in going for shred prices? How are you finding the time to sort and separate?

    Good share!

I should also mention, as a computer shop owner, we get in good with the cable/internet guys. People are ALWAYS getting viruses, and the first people they ask are the internet folks that install their internet.

I give all our cable/internet guys referral fees when the refer someone. I'm also happy to give them free work from time to time.

Now that you mentioned this, I think I'll bring it to their attention.

Welcome to the forum from Mickey Mouse land(Florida) I don't know what state your from but if you have to get a hotel room you might get better rates by going through a travel agency. Also come in the off season(anytime after April) you'll find the rates are lower after all the tourest go home. It gets to hot for the kids in the sommer time(June,July Aug.) Oh, Travel agencies can get you bundle packages with hotel room, addmisstion, car rental or what ever. So do your home work and you'll have a grate time.

Offer me a large enough bribe of beverages for the cooler, or send me a buncha LNB boards..an I might bribe the wife to get you a discount at a hotel off site.

Or do as Happy says. Resorts can you a decent deal, and it's always cheaper to go visit somewhere in the off season. I'm not a fan of the travel agent, last time I used one for Disney they dropped the ball. Since then..I just use the wife's discount, stay off site, save a ton of money, and still have a good enough time, I worry I might need bail.

    YMMV

Edit : You can buy adult beverages at the Magic Kingdom, and Epcot now. Also the Hollywood park. Great bar, on the inside circle, where the parade goes by. You'll know it when you visit.

Sirscrapalot - Last trip to disney..$35 a night, and in a nice hotel. Discounts rock.
