I caught a guy dumping CRT tubes in Lake Winnebago

I do not have any sympathy for the man and the punishment that he may face. But if this is not the first time he has dumped them that way what environmental hazard got created. Tubes obviously have a hole in them otherwise I can't see anyone trying to push a bobber that size under 20" of ice. His problems will likely make it to wherever he did his scrapping, home, shed, property. I vision lots of yellow plastic tape, guys in white hazmat suits, black shiny cars and guys with badges.
You did the right thing stopping something that just should not happen.

and he's just one who got caught. How many others are doing preposterous deeds to our planet every minute. Not just individuals, but companies also, even whole nations. The one that I find most alarming is the greenhouse gasses, global warming, and the fact that weather patterns are getting so out of line there's no telling what to expect next.
Be nice if we could do something about those problems too. There's so many Hollywood movies of gigantic natural(or manmade) disasters that anyone can bring one to mind. There's actually some real ones now, most recall hurricane Sandy. There's also a new NOVA special, it'll show on PBS tonight, about the immense typhoon that recently hit the Phils.

What the Holy Hell!! The human race never ceases to amase me. Good Job!!!!

So I was crossing the lake to take down two stave silos, with a trailer...only I would cross the lake towing 10k lbs ;) I did see two DNR vehicles one on each side of the ice road today. I didn't see them doing anything at the spot I caught the guy but there is a tent of some kind out there now, but nobody there. I get strange looks from people when they see my truck and trailer but hey, got to make a living. Right now the ice is avg 22 inch thick and getting thicker every day. I generally don't cross with a trailer until they report a 16 inch average because it is very heavy when I'm hauling staves to the amish. In case your wondering... going around the lake to the sites is 38-50 miles for me whereas crossing the ice road is 12 miles, it's a no brainer. Plus eating at Jim and Linda's supperclub is a bonus.

As far as the CRT guy, I've heard nothing about it...though I can understand it being kept as quiet as possible a lead scare would freak people out around here. I'm not sure but I'd think the tubes are heavy enough to sink without breaking them? I don't really know for sure...

Yeah im sure they would float good with all that "gas" inside em ;) ;)

For something to float, all it needs to do is weigh less than the amount of water it displaces.

Figure 8.35 pounds or so per gallon. How much does a tube weigh? I'll bet it weighs less than the same volume of water.

I think a tube from a standard 15" monitor would probably take up the space of about 3 gallons. I may be way off, but if that is the case then if the tube weighs less than 25 pounds it will float.

People like this are just stupid enough to make the news and reflect poorly on us all. They wont put the good stuff on, but this I am sure made the local news.

I am far from one for "blueberries" as you term them. I cant help but say thank you for turning in this idiot. It is people like that that are getting stupid laws and regulations passed that make our life hell an prevent us from doing what we do.

As a fisherman it pisses me off even more. Stupid crap like this effects everyone not just scrappers, and can take food off our tables. The person deserves to be used as fish bait, preferably cut into bait size pieces with piano wire...

I have a natural affliction to police that probably has alot to do with how I grew up and our income level I guess...didn't mean that to be derogatory, and for most people it means the lights on top of the cars. I did a test to see if he did have to break the necks off the tubes...and the little ones, no, but the bigger one's I'd say he did. That's very bad I'd say. Sealed CRTs aren't really a threat to anything, I know all about the properties of leaded glass to know better than to believe they are leeching lead into everything, that said, what about the phosphors?

Well...look at it like this. Better than 90% of the population at large walks around with their blinders on. The old horse to trough, trough to barn routine...as long as those two things are always there they pay no mind to anything else. I served alot of my time overseas and as any OIF OEF vet that convoyed or basically went outside the wire can tell you...head on a swivel. I pay attention to just about everything...activities, trash, when I'm curbshopping I'm awfully good at mining out the good stuff so I can drive along, not inhibit any traffic and stop at a spot instead of having to back up. Likewise I stay aware of my surroundings...so when I saw those tubes I ran through a short list of possibles including simply taking a shortcut across the lake like I do regularly.

Ahh well...on to other things.

Any news on how this is turning out?
Still can hardly believe that anyone in this day n' age hasn't got it through their head you just can't dump stuff anywhere.... Maybe that's the problem--empty head!

I've heard nothing, so far as I know the DNR recovered what was dumped, anyone living in the Oshkosh was probably wondering what the trucks and dive squads were all about, I had seen them diving on the North road a few times but nothing in the papers, probably for the best...that's an outrage that would probably have closed down the ice roads forever...because of one *******.

Saw this on the side of the road yesterday about 3 miles from a tire shop. Almost stopped in to ask if they recently paid someone to haul off some tires.
