    How much do you tip?

I'm just curious what other people tip after a long days work, when they hit the local pub/restaurant for some grub? I generally tip around %15 minimum unless its poor service and then its what ever is convenient.

    Sometimes I wonder though, if I get a $6.00 order, do I leave $0.90?

One of my friends doesn't leave a tip anywhere he goes (so I rarely go out to eat with him haha)..

I'm a soda guy, so if my glass runs empty they get no tip. And for each glass that doesn't run empty they get 2 dollars for up to 4 glasses of soda. Odd way of tipping, lol but it works. A guy my dad knows got into a waitress about his tip, so he took the tip he was going to leave, and put it in a glass of water and used a menu to flip the full glass onto the table, and slid the menu out and left her tip like that. lol if that made sense to any of you.

Yup I get what your cookin haha - prob made a little bit of a mess. If she was smart she'd slide it off the table into a bus bucket =P

Earlier today I went out to watch the AFC game - waitress was pretty good, but gave me the wrong bill. I didn't notice but thought it was kind of expensive. She caught her mistake and let me know, and gave me the correct one before taking my money. When she did though, she gave me back a $5 and a $10 - (my bill was 26.14) this was kind of annoying as I didn't want to leave her a $5 or a $10 and I only had $20's. I was thinking $7.00 since I had saved $10 on a special they were having it didn't really matter to me. I put the 10 down initially, and after a moment of annoyance figured she wanted the $5.00 so I swapped them out. She screwed herself out of $2.00! That's like a couple Lb's of brass

    Big tipper here real big.
Working in restaurants for over 13 years I have a good idea what that smile looked like when she went behind the doors. She got screwed a 1 top with a 5 dollar tip when the table could have been a 4-8 top making 20-100 in the same amount of time.
The tip you left was fine it's just the order of the waitresses they want the big party'$

I always leave 2 bucks whether I have a 6 dollar meal or a 12 dollar meal. Unless I just have soup, in which case I just leave a buck.

However, I offset that by never ordering a beverage. I just have water.

Tips are based on my experience, the pride the employee takes in their vocation, and what I can afford. I respect those that make a living this way. I will not return to places that has one person taking the order, another one filling the water glasses, and a third bringing the food. There is no one to take responsibility. The other business practice that turns me off, is an automatic tip added to the bill. To me this is a form of bait and switch. The menu offers a meal for so much with a mandatory tip of ? It takes away the ability to say thank you and the motivation for the employee to excel.

Trying to get the bill to an even dollar amount makes it easier on book keeping and usually ends in a better tip.

Worked as a carhop many years ago so I know how hard most of the servers work for there money. For me I try to leave 18% if my meal is under $10 I leave $2. If I get tbad service I leave nothing.

    25% if Stellar
    20% standard
15% if they need some improvement
Then I get to the dreaded $1 or "Insulting tip" on VERY rare occasions (Maybe twice in 20+ years)

I base it off time spent occupying table, and time spent occupying waiter/tress. The longer I'm there (assuming it's voluntary, not waiting an hour for food), and the more time the individual has to spend at my table (depending on how busy it is), usually plays the major factor in my tipping. Service is usually the deciding factor, depending on how their night seems to be going, and if they care about getting me my refill or food in a timely manner.

I've tipped up to 100% depending on how the night went(not sure I want to tell those type of stories), but usually no more than 40% on a regular night. Ya gotta realize that the waiter/tress has a set number of tables per hour that they can potentially serve at, and they get paid ~$3/hr depending on the workplace.

I like to believe that I'm a better than average tipper for a 23 year old. I usually bashed my fraternity brothers in college for tormenting a cute little waitress then leaving a 5% tip. They remember the poor tip the next time you walk in the door. It usually ruins the evening for the table with crappy service, and usually not coming back or asking for a different waitress. (yes, it has been done)

If I'm by myself I usually do $5 no matter what as long as the service is good whether I be at a diner, the Waffle House or a nicer restaurant. If I've got the guys with me or I'm on the rare date 10 to 20. When I'm at a hotel bar and I order a meal I start at 10. I like sledge have left the dreaded $1 and I'll be honest it has to be bad. If I'm with my family and they add tips to the bill for large parties that's all they get, that's one of the things that get under my skin

When I was younger I was a delivery driver for a local hamburger joint, I got the keep the change on a burger and fries on a 20 a few times.

For pizza delivery guys I usually leave em $3 bucks and at an actual restaurant I leave $3-5. Servers make less than min wage, but the delivery guys here make min wage. Sometimes more. And all they really have to do is sit around, drive and walk up to a door. Alot less work than servers. (My roommate was a driver for a few months)
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

I worked in restaurants/bars for 15 years until over a year ago. The last 10 of which was bartending. I've done ultra fine dining to applebee's.

Patriot76 - Places with multiple people doing different services for you have a hierarchy. It's not just the manager that runs everything. A server is master of their table section, and directs everyone else. If something goes wrong, it's their problem first. This is the person taking your order and checking on you. The other people actually get tipped by the server for their work...just like you tipping at the end of the meal. There is accountability in many forms, and if everyone is doing their job correctly, this kind of place will give you the best service possible.

What do I leave? 20% normally. It can go up from there. If the person is just plain rude, then it goes down. If something happens out of the person's control which is usually most of the problems, that doesn't affect their tip.

As a worker, what you left really didn't affect me. I'm going to make my money that day and it all averages out. What was important is that you were a pleasant customer. If a person is demanding, rude, extremely fussy, etc. your level of service is just normally going to go down. That's even if it's not intentional - in the back of your mind, you just don't want to go back to that customer.

So, being a pleasant customer leads to good service. Bad tipping and being pleasant will usually lead to either the server wondering what they did wrong, or they will be mad. It just depends on the person.

Believe it or not, most waiters/bartenders are able to give you free stuff! If you are a great customer AND tip well I would always go out of my way to provide you with extra perks for coming in. Maybe a free beer, other drink(free soda/coffee/etc was really easy to do), extra heavy pours on your cocktails, appetizer, dessert, whatever. I had several regulars that never paid for their sodas, never. It's not like things are being stolen either. This is an acceptable thing to do, and normally would either go through a manager or someone with authority. Bartenders are given a lot of leeway with drinks normally, but it depends on where you are working.

For me, it wasn't that big of a deal I guess. I just wanted my day to go well. If anyone has any questions about the intricacies of tipping, feel free to ask.

I DJ'd in a bar for 4 years before getting married... Can't give you any tips on getting the 'tender to go home with you- they deal with that ALL NIGHT LONG.. EVERY NIGHT.
I had to train my patrons to tip me.
They would say "Tips for a DJ?"
I said "Heck yeah man- do you tip your tender a buck to give you a beer?"
    "Umm Yeah"
"Do you tip your server if she brings that beer to your table?"
    "Umm Yeah"
"Then why would you not tip me when I play a song you hope will "get ya some?"

Then they would plop their $ in the tip jar. BOOM!
