In class, discussing scrap. kinda funny.

So im in class (at an automotive school) the prof and a few students started talking scrap. Its funny listening to them. I may have to pipe uo... They are throwing money away...

They dont clean alum rads, they take CATS to the SCRAP YARD... List goes on.

If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

So, offer to buy the stuff a little above what their getting now and "turn and burn". In this case, knowledge is money.

I have a 2 hr drive one way so they arent in my area. I didnt say anything but they are getting more from the yards in the city than im getting here. I may talk to this one guy about buying his cats though.

Edit: they are getting more for stuff like auto cast and clean alum, copper, etc. If I can buy the dirty alum for more than they get i may be able to make decent money.

KZ and Mechanic- I couldn't have said it better myself.

Jord- Sir, this is a huge opportunity to learn a very valuable lesson. Heed what KZ and Mechanic said, for the real world is near and this could be one of many "edges" you have to make your way to a fortune. I'm going to say this outloud, I generally do not (it is an internal thought) but with scrapping as the example- Every single one of us here does one thing: We profit from others ignorance!

Someone throws out a Steel rim- we pick it up- we profit!
Someone has no idea what to do with a washing machine: We pick it up- we profit!
Someone has a car sitting in their driveway- we wave cash in front of them- we buy it cheap and we profit!

We all know what something, someone else has, thrown to waste- either out of sheer ignorance of what it's true value is, or where in the world they can make that money, or they just are too lazy or ignorant to find out. THESE are the opportunities that we all must seize- when they are right in front of our face! Because right now- the scrap yard that these fools are selling converters too for what is your shred price $140/ton- every time they come in they say "CA-CHING! You can now take that bread out of their mouths and feed yours!

    Just my .25 cents!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Ignorance & I'd add laziness to that.

Case in point, awhile back I spotted a shiny-yellow-metal fireplace fascia leaning up against someone's house. No answer the first time I knocked, but the next week the fascia was still there, and the guy was home.

I asked if I could have it, and then he asked what it was worth. I looked at him & said... "well... I'm not going to lie to you. I hefted it, said, minus the glass, it'll probably weigh out at 30 pounds. Now, if that's all steel, then we're talking 2 bucks, maybe two and a quarter. But it this yellow metal is actually brass... well, brass is about 2 bucks a pound."

He said, "Nah, I ain't got time to mess with that. You take it."

It was brass. 25# worth, along with a bit of steel. Fifty bucks in my pocket because he was too lazy.

Like Auminer...I find most folks are to lazy to do the work to break the stuff down to max profit. I got a couple folks who know what I do, any they asked once. I took the time to break it down, an sure enough after talking an such they said.."yea..way to much work for me, easier to just toss it out." lol. Works for me.

Most people I think fall into the lazy category. They can't be bothered to gather the weight, take the time to learn the industry, etc.

People want easy money, with no hard work. Once they find out the work can be hard, they can't be bothered, easier for them to take the cash I offer them.
