100 computers from the repair shop

Finally got my computer repair shop to sell me his old inventory. I have been trading parts with him for three months and he finally is clearing his warehouse to make room for new towers. The first load was 100 complete towers all with hd's, 2 sticks of ram, all drives etc. He said he will have another 50 ready to go next week and probably another 25 after that. He is also moving out all his smaller gig IDE harddrives and I will be seeing those as well as any scrap ram,pci cards, power supplies or anything else he wants to get rid of. I have pictures posted in my photo albums under "100 computers" if anyone wants to take a look (since i still have a hard time posting pics in the thread). Also got a bonus white box tower thrown in that had a cyrix gold cap ceramic in the socket on the mobo!

    Lot of Dell's there.

Gotta love them, they make them so easy to open and strip apart.

That ran me 3-4 months of establishing a business relationship with him. A bit of advice for the new people here. I had visions when I first started of walking into a place and offering money and thinking I was going to walk out with pockets full of $$$from the ewaste I got. Guess what, it doesn't work that way. No one is going to work with a stranger coming in off the street. Maybe you get lucky 1 in 100 times being in the right place at the right time, maybe.
I started trading working items with him for his scrap. One hard drive for two scrap ones, one 1gig ram stick for three scrap ones etc.If he mentioned to me he was looking for a certain item I would check what I had or tried to use my contacts to find it for him. He also has a donation gaylord that he fills up once a month that he sends to some place in NJ that helps the elderly. So when I curb shopped I would drop off a tv or printer or vcr once a week knowing that he appreciated it. When I traded him a harddrive or whatever that tested bad I made **** sure I had a replacement to give him right quick.
I paid what I always pay for complete towers knowing that I can make at least double my investment back. On this deal he actually threw in 10 extra towers that he had found in a back corner that he wanted gone. I offered to pay for them and was told to get him an iced tea next time I was around. He got it an hour after I finished unloading and stacking the computers in my garage.

True words of wisdom. Despite what everyone tells you, sometimes doing as the words above say is much better then being all cutthroat an dreaming of the max profit you can make.

It works for me, an as you can see BC an I'm sure plenty of others.

YES! I've been doing what brass talked about, trying to be the one guy with the money at the right time in the right place. It does work, however, not nearly as often as I hoped or in my naiveté thought it would work. BUT, when it does work, I do everything I can to make sure my customers are happy. If I sell a "working" item to someone, it has a 100% guarantee (in person, not ebay.) It will either work, or I will replace it or refund their money. Period. I stay in contact with those I buy from, especially the repair shops. I've found that I can always use an extra working XP machine to test drives or something. So, almost every shop I have bought scrap from has repaired something for me or I've purchased something from them. This has provided me with relationship building opportunities. One of my biggest competitors is moving out of the area. He called me and wanted to know if I wanted to buy some of his stuff. He said he got my name from a mutual customer. It works. Sometimes slowly, but it works. One bay of my garage is almost 2/3 full of scrap waiting for me to process...most of it for free. It works. (Sorry Brass, not meaning to hijack, just provide another example of the importance of relationship building.)
