Question i've been seeing quite a few new "stealth scrappers" lately

this spring ive noticed more "stealth scrappers". aka pickup trucks without ladder racks or wood sides. where i live, it's never been normal to not have walls, we drive trucks that look like the ones in the pic below. and it's harder to tell if they're scrappers unless you see the stop to get somethin, or when they become fully loaded. so i ask curbside scrappers, do you have walls or not?

I have ran both ways....We call em sideboards around here (LOL)......It really doesn't make much difference in my opinion as they both have their advantgages........Sideboards do allow you to haul more scrap at one time but can get in the way doing other things.....Either way it really depends on what your focus is....I don't really need em to haul ewaste but when I hauled alot of heavy scrap they were worth it

I don't have walls but I plan on making some sideboards at the very least this year. I'm short so its already dicey for me to toss something heavy over the side of my truck and if I have walls I'd have to put the tailgate down every time I stopped for something large.

I've been piled that high before without walls with some inventive packing and strapping but I think at least sideboards or half way back walls are needed this year for safety as well as being able to carry more in one run.

Yikes, if those trucks were in California, the local cops and CHP would have a field day writing tickets. At least one ticket would be for not covering the load with a tarp or equivelant.
Get this: Arrive at the local landfill scales without the load being covered, could cost you $40.

stealth scrappers ? the word stealth is to not be known . 4 years ago my van was perfect (a mini type) now it looks like a scrap van BUT true stealth is a vehicle not known on it's rounds till you finally have a nasty barbecue grill on top with a micro-wave nestled in wile your at it .

Lol, I used to be weary of every truck I saw until I saw minivans and small cars scrapping too now! SUV's are getting popular also around me. Now, everybody no matter what they drive is a possible stealth scrapper

Honda CRV (actually full of scrap right now, making a trip tomorrow) or Subaru Forester stick with a 4ft - 8ft trailer. I can haul some pretty good weights in them.

Ha..I used to have a 2003 Elantra...wife totaled it driving in the snow, exactly a month after I had paid it off... She was ok (thankfully!) but man I miss that **** car. Loved that little sucker.

I use a mini-van and I fill that sucker up and haul away. You can fit quite a bit in one, specially if you don't care about having the backseats in. I don't as I have 2 dogs, and no kids. So seats stay out cept for when the Niece comes to visit us, then I put one in and enjoy my week off from work.

I use a 2001 ton cargo van with a 12 by 7 foot dump trailer I have not put extended sides on it, but I have smashed the load down with my backhoe. The plate in the dump trailer is 1/4" and the square tubing is also thick it takes a beating, but it is also very heavy.

I also use a 2006 Nissan Titan with some type of kayak rack. family commuter and scrap chaser.

I have a few other trailers including an equipment trailer and a small 4 by 8 lite duty trailer with a ramp.

I also have a 1987 stake bed old Chevy truck with a harbor freight crane on the back it is presently registured inop.

It is a lot harder to get in rural areas and congested recycle places with a trailer.

Insurance is killing me I register three cars.

Yeah I love the Elantra. It is an 03 with 265,000 miles on it. But it is still going strong. Cant fit a whole lot but it is very unexpected at night.

I got boards on my S10 that rise slightly above the roof of the cab, actually gonna be reconstructing them with the warm weather coming to be a 4 wall box with either barn doors or a single door that opens to one side above the tailgate, alot easier to keep stuff in without having to hog-tie it all.

I do not use a cage. I'm in your general area and yes most guys trucks look like those ones. I just think it looks bad; I also like to cut risk by not calling attention to myself. I think if you have a professionally mounted mesh cage its acceptable. However, as you may have seen a lot of guys cages are very wobbley and looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen, wait till something falls out and causes harm.

If your insurance catches wind of what you are hauling and you are not carrying commercial insurance you might be up s*#!s creek without a paddle. I prefer to bed load the truck and transfer to my trailer. I also don't like the idea of parking what looks like people mistake as a garbage truck in my driveway. my trailer is parked in a lot a few miles a way. Instead of taking in 1,000 pounds a trip like most guys, I roll across the scales with payloads of 3 to 6 thousand, its a lot more efficient.
