    Antique welder

    I bought an antique welder last weekend for $75. It had 18 plugs on it to adjust the amperage, not a dial. I took it apart this morning and it was not as hard as I thought it would be. After taking the transformers out it took about 15 min of banging and prying to get the steel off the windings. They where just sandwiched together.
    Copper windings from 2 transformers 65 pounds.
    1 stripped cable [the insulation was falling apart] 11 pounds
    1 longer cable [I did not strip yet, the insulation is good so I may try to sell and it as is] 27 pounds
    18 brass plugs for plugging the cables into at 3 oz each + a few other fitting that came with it.



    Close to 100 pounds of copper. Not bad. I think I will watch for these. I know to stay away from the "tombstone" and newer welders with Aluminum windings.

    I offered $75 and he just replied with $100. It is in the same town as I live so I think I will buy it.

    did a quick search on CL and everyone around here wants a gazillion dollars for theirs... 100lbs copper? gr8 score!

    Picking up the other one in my link above tomorrow night. Be careful, a lot of the new ones have Aluminum transformers.
    I unwound the big transformer, the wingdings are flat bar shaped and the weight of the copper is 91 pounds.

    anyway, to the point. found this guys channel after you told me how much copper was in these machines. i don't know anything about welders but this guy does. reading the comments on his vids you can gain some info on which brands are crap. from my extremely tiny bit of experience, any machine that is crap should have much less copper.
    for those (like myself) that have no knowledge of these machines, the comment section of experienced welders might be useful info... perhaps, but entertaining at the least.

    Bought a older Forney welder and charger model# D 130 single phase.Unit had al.front and back covers.
    I do not know if there is any coralation with the covers and transformers,but tranformers were aluminum also.
    The power cord was 50 ft.of 10-3. Hoping to sell on C.L. and break even. Unit did not have any leads.
