So after joining this forum yesterday I got a hair up my ass and started posting some advertisements on craigslist and whatnot. Got a call about an hour later. Thought I was going to pick up three old (tube) televisions; ended up with one flat panel lcd, a flat screen dlp tv, and a huuuuuuuuge 55' big screen tv, plus a free surround sound system Im going to install tonight. Was kind of disappointed because Ive never taken an old tube tv and yoke apart. I would like the copper, but when I started looking at the big screen I noticed it has three yokes in it. So basically I got what I was hoping for plus some extra goodies. Im going to start tearing this apart tonight but Im not exactly sure of the best methods for the lcd and the dlp. Anyone have any experience with these? Im probably going to just start tearing this apart but in my experiences I usually start throwing valuable things away when I just tearing into them all willy nilly like.

Glad that you took care of that hair...lol...when I started i tried to read as many of the old threads that pertained to what i was tearing apart and 90% of my questions were answered while reading. Tear it all down put aside what you have questions on, research the threads and then if you cant find an answer then post the question. First if the lcds and dlps screens are not cracked i would see if they turn on. If they do then they may be worth more than scrap to a tv repair or computer repair shop. If they dont or if they have cracked screens than tear them down. They should have some decent boards in them. Keep all the wires,lowgrade boards,transformers etc... By doing this you will have instant knowledge on what to look for in the next one.

The one with the three yolks is a projection TV. I'm pretty sure there is some kind of mineral oil in the glass the yolk is attached to, so be careful. Sounds like you did pretty good for your first TV's.

BRASSCATCHER- I think one of my biggest problems is that I end up tearing crap apart rather than trying to sell it as is. Ive done that a few times with hard drives. I dont know I just feel like Im going to find like a million dollars inside if I rip it apart right this second.

Most flatscreen TVs can be sold to someone who fixes them for more than you'd make as scrap. I just sold a few to a guy for quite a bit more than scrap.

Turns out you can remove the yokes without disturbing the glass or the liquid. Found that out after I got that stuff all over the garage with the first tube. Also smashed the glass and am pretty sure Im going to get super cancer from all the fumes Im assuming it was filled with.

(Knocking head on desk) If it was a CRT you broke, don't worry. It is a VACUUM and it is taking air INTO the tube, and there is no fumes, gasses or "X-radiation" in the tube. You will survive.

i took one of those apart 2 weeks ago. you can get the 3 yolks off without getting oil on your floor. the problem comes when loosening the spring bolts to retrieve the metal casing around the glass lights. i still haven't removed the other 2 yet, didn't know what fluid was in there so thx for the link.

Gravitar - You know everything I have read says the same exact thing, but it only takes one person to post some comment about lead/phosphorus/agent orange death gases, to get me worried.

jghilino- are those cut or is that exactly how they look? Are the ribbons valuable as well? I figured they werent and have just been tossing them in a pile.
Speaking of boards, is there any value to the batteries I strip off? The ones that vary from supper small to like larger than d-cell batteries? Ive got piles of these **** things and Im assuming I should just toss them.

NWOdrudge - Its funny you say that because once I realized I could get the yoke off without screwing with those bolts I just left them like that, didnt even consider the value of the metal. I think Im just going to open them over an oil drip pan I have and take it to autozone to dump it.

Those are fresh pulls from monitors/tvs. The gold and silver ribbon cables are of value and should be saved. Same think on batteries, pull them and separate them by type, ni-cad, nimh, lithium ion, lead acid and so on, there are buyers in the buyers section that pay for those.

what batteries?? there is no batteries in tv's, are you talking about can caps.??

maybe can caps is the proper term but I always assumed they were some sort of battery, Im talking about the ones on boards that Ive been ripping off, they vary but most say 12v dc, or 3v, theyre soldered on with two teeth to the board they range from like a 1/4" in diameter to like... 3" in the last tv I did. Im pretty sure theyre of no value since Ive never seen anyone mention them.
