Following up on this, I was wondering if it was possible to fashion a HDD tester/dock from an old external HDD. I have a couple of both SATA and IDE externals from which I have pulled drives. Could they be repurposed to operate as docks for testing?
Yes they can. You can also purchase for very little cables that have the ability to connect to IDE, SATA and the old laptop hard drives that I believe are also referred to as IDE. Check out
eBay and
Amazon. The other end of this type of cable is USB so its ready to work.
Add to your list of very cheap items a tester for tower power supplies. Find a good tower power supply that has both IDE AND SATA power connectors. Attach the tester to that power supply and plug it in. Now all the out put connectors are live. You can now test hard drives, and optical drives.
Watch some youtube videos and you too will be an expert. 73, Mike
