wont boot up

That Dell laptop my grandma brought me won't boot not even in safe mode I'm pretty good with computers but I haven't worked with one for awhile or kept up with stuff could it be because it has xp? Any help would be much appreciated

Do you even have power light? I know my family loves to leave the laptop run till the battery is so dead it won't turn on. I have to plug it it and charge for about 30 min before it will boot. Then all is good.

It runs Windows xp and it turns a on and tries to boot but it won't go all the way

What do you mean it won't go all the way, does it get to the windows loading screen? does it blue screen? We can help but need specifics.

Dad tried it and all I saw was it got to the Windows loading screen and I looked away and he said it boot up all the way

Thats good. If for some reason you get a blue-screen with an error of 0x000000, that's bad memory. Memory and hard drive are the things that go first. The CPU is the rarest thing to go.

I use Ubuntu on a thumb drive or cd to test out computers instead of the operating system on the hard drive. I can also use the same cd or thumb drive if there is no hard drive in the computer. Why use another operating system well that completely removes any problems from the hard drive and Windows operating system. Also Ubuntu is very easy to use and figures out how to use the devises without hard work or downloading drivers. Mike

If you can get it to boot, run a scan on the c drive and tell it to do the fixes.

If it boots, you're in good shape. I'd put Linux on her, though. XP is past it's prime, but Linux will keep on ticking!

I fix computers by day, and I've seen a lot of these. It was probably just slow and outdated- we get tons of the older stuff dropped off. If that laptop is as new as my personal one is (2004), Linux will have that thing running like a dream!

I personally recommend Xubuntu for the older machines. My 11 year old laptop works great with it!

I love Linux. lol. I am running Ubuntu with a Mac OSX lion hack or better know as MacBuntu, on a Dell Inspiron 810 laptop. Runs very well on the older machine.

- RAM could be going bad. To fix, run with one stick at a time to see if the problem persist. If that doesn't work, then the next thing I would suspect would be a bad sector on the hard drive. That can be detected by running a diagnosis scan. Dell has a great diagnosis tool. If you replace the hard drive and it still does it, then I would suspect the motherboard.
