    Brass Lamps

The other night my dad and I went out. We got a couple of lamps of which turned out to be brass. It is at least 15 lbs. I am happy about that.

Hey that's always a good find! I always look for real brass lamps and candleholders and such at yard sales and auctions. There is a lot of that stuff out there that you can get for cheapo.

Thats awesome! I would suggesting hitting it with a grinder to make sure it is brass, and not zinc. Brass colored zinc and solid brass are hard to tell apart sometimes, but either way you have a good find.

I have found myself disappointed a few times with this. Kind of hard to feel the density difference sometimes, when it still has other stuff attatched.

Dee, my main non ferrous dealer does buy zinc, and most bigger yards that I know of will, too. If I only have a few pounds, he is kind enough to throw it on the scale with my sheet aluminum. If I have a bunch, I gotta take the hit, as he will weigh it separately.

I go to a big yard and all the guys in the non ferrous shed speak another language...won't say which as to not offend anyone. They have learned the english words for the metals and a few other words, but it's awfully difficult to communicate....especially since I am hearing impaired. They don't even know how to tell the difference between aluminum and stainless. I tell them it's stainless and if it doesn't stick to their magnet, they take my word for it....isn't that weird? That's why I said I didn't think they would know the diff between brass, bronze or zinc. If it looks remotely like brass, I have always just assumed it was and threw it in my brass bucket and they never question. Didn't know zinc looked like brass...did you say it's lighter in weight ? thanks.

Dee, it looks like really porous aluminum, but many of those pot metal lamps had a fake brass paint job

Don't be too hasty on scrapping brass lamps. They are often worth better than scrap value just sold as-is, especially if old, retro, vintage, or antique. You can tell age at times by looked at the plug end on the cord. Antiquers and lamp resellers will pay more, then repair/polish and resell. Or list on CL as steampunk decor.
