    Cash cow?

One of the girls I went to school with works as a Range officer at our local gun range. and she said they do not recycle their spent shells. So I took a ride up there this morning and she showed me around the place. I leaned down and in one grab got the picture shown underneath. There is sooo much brass there it is pretty much like their new gravel. Once the snow melts I think I'm going to have a festival there.

    Wow great score

everyone, make sure you keep bullet brass separate from regular brass. most, if not all yards require them to be separated. I think their is a safety issue with the smelting or something like that.

That looks like all spent .22's...I'd be keeping anything else for reloading purposes.

Those are just .22's. I don't have a gun so there is no purpose for me keeping anything bigger.

you might want to check your local harbor freight to see if they carry a rare earth rolling brass magnet

That might pick up a few rocks as well, but still might be easier to sort afterwards than hands and knees.

Maybe you can get permission to install bins or something to catch shells as they are ejected?

Depending on how much you make there weekly or monthly after the ground is cleared, you may want to buy pizza or something for them every now and then, so they will be loyal to you if someone else asks about the brass in the future.

Another thing to look into, the lead and possibly copper bullets that have been fired

With EPA regulations in NJ they have to clean out their backstops every couple of months. I was talking to one of the ladies who works there but she said she wasn't sure of who did that. I think that would be to big of a job for me.

That is indeed a very good find. They have quite a few shooting ranges around here along with many of the local police departments that have their own private ranges.

I don't exactly know what you mean by center fire. I will be collecting many forms of these shells though.

see where the center piece is pressed in, they press in new firing caps and the brass can be reused. The 22 is smooth across the bottom/ disposable.

Another thing to look out for are flying bullets, they can do some damage.

I'm allowed to go in before the range is even open. This range is extremely tight on their rules.

I was just kidding. But it is nice to know that nobody will be shooting while you are collecting bullet casings. Two yards by my are paying 1.00# for brass bullet casings.

Run a magnet thru the casings after you collect them... some of them are just brass covered steel.... if you look at the one at the top of the picture, you see it is rusty. Lots of shot gun shells are like that
