Around here, it goes with Iron/Steel
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

If it's manetic it isn't at least 11% chrome and therefore is not SS grade

18/0 or 430 stainless is magnetic but contains 18% chromium. It is the nickel that is missing like in the 18/8 or 18/10 304 grades. I imagine the chromium has value but is difficult to tell the difference and separate so the yards just get this as a freebie

My yard takes it as shred.

I just took in a SS commercial stove and got shred price for it. I was just happy to get rid of it because it was covered completely with half an inch of grease. Sometimes I really wonder about eating in restaurants...

I throw all of my stainless in a barrel regardless of it
being magnetic or not and the yard doesn't mind. I got around .55 a pound last time I went to the scrap yard about a month ago.

Over the last couple months they were cleaning out an old Howard Johnson hotel here. It was a hotel/resturaunt/bar. When the place shut down, they literally walked out and left everything. The deep fryers had 4 year old grease in them, cereal dispensers had moldy cereal, etc. They were selling "entire rooms" (ones that werent damage by leaky roofs). Every mattress I looked at was stained. Well, people bought this stuff, and bought it for their own buissinesses. Makes me sick thinking about it.

It is worth money if you have enough of it. Start at a ton or more, then bargain with the scrappers.

Stainless steels at a real low price, anyone know why? Less to bargain with with the buyers, ****.

It used to be the 'diamond' in the scrap pile, good $ but we didn't know how much $ untill we sold it.

Most of the dishwashers I have scrapped have had a (un)fair amount of magnetic stainless on them.

as a rule if a magnet sticks it is shred, as said above.

I was also told that if I can produce the exact same type / alloy in weight, they will buy at better than shred, but will have to hit it with a gun to determine grade alloy content. Less than 500 lbs is not worth their time to find a outlet for,and they prefer at least one ton. They also prefer it to be single pieces or a few large chunks. Something not many of us can produce, let alone squirreling the same exact alloy in that kinda weight.

I send mine as shred simply because I don't get enough magnetic ss to even come close to making it worth separating and attempting identify alloy content.
