I mixed some hydrogen peroxide in water and placed one of the chunks Id broken in half into it. the piece has bubbles on the outside of the rock and what look like some sort of gas in tiny bubble escaping from the whole thing, looks like its boiling. it also look like some of it may be dissolving, but i can tell they may just be tiny bubbles. Its gone on about 10 minutes now. I think ill leave it in for a while and see what happens.
I also put a few regular small rocks/ pebbles in the same solution. they let a few a few bubbles out at first but then stopped doing anything.
Thanks for all your help so far everybody.

I dug up some stuff in a slag dump one time, which the yard identified as "melted manganese". They weren't interested in buying it.

My vote is for mica schist. Mica is flaky but mica schist has been metamorphosed to lose it's flaky texture and becomes more grainy.

Took a piece into a couple scrap yards. The first didnt have a gun, so called around. Took it to the second. The guy told me it'd be $50 to scan it but didnt know what it was either. They scanned it and it was manganese. mystery solved

Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

Maybe try to sell it on one of those knife/sword making forums to one of those guys(?)
Seems like one of them who smelt "buttons" of iron, craft their own steel etc. would be interested.

(Cutlery making is my other full-time "hobby" although I've put it on hold a while when my wife had some dental issues)...
(An English man actually had meteorite rocks smelted in with a sword one time...)

Interesting read, good pics. Glad this whole thing wasn't a joke post or something.
    Thanks!
