New to scrapping and I not sure what to do

I am a bit of a hoarder and never throw anything away so my new years res was to change this since i can't even park in the garage. I was cleaning my garage and found

    1. stand up freezer
    2. a roll of cable wire the directv guy forgot to take with him
    3. 3 microwaves, all in working order
    4. a clothes dryer
    5. a washing machine
    6. 3 razor scooters my kids never use and an electric scooter
( I only have 2 kids, I have no idea where all these scooters came from)
    7. a basketball pole with cement attached to the bottom
    8. a garage door opener with a really long metal thing attached
    9. a box of chargers and power cords and misc wires from old gadgets
    10. 5 computer cases dating back to 1990, they all have their original components inside
    11. one of those ride on scooters for adults (it was given to me when my grandma died)
    12. a kids motorized car
    13. a box of keyboards and mice
    14. 3 hp printers
    15. 2 television and 1 old pc monitor
    16. a box of remote controls

from reading the forum I kind of know what is scrappable but not really. I think I am supposed to strip the cable wire, and remove the motors from everything. I am so not sure. I would have never considered doing any of this had there not been a guy at my job that did this almost full time. I would have asked him but he was laid off a few months ago. Any help would be appreciated.

PS I know all of this has been discussed before but er um, I only know what copper looks like, the rest is cryptic at best for me. I'd rather someone else do it and we just split the profit..sigh

Get a bunch of 5 gallon buckets and start with 1 item at a time.

Hiya dude! Yeah, grab yourself a screw driver and big hammer and dismantle the lot. Seperate everything from steel (which is magnetic). Pull out motors and either sell as they are or break apart for copper. Strip all the wire you can. Hacksaw your scooters to separate aluminium. Take the battery out of the car, but don't (whatever you do) open it.
Most important is just to learn what each bit of everything is made of. If it's metal, pull it. Dump the rest responsibly.
    Good luck bro!

The old ride on scooter might be worth more then scrap. yes pull all the motors, strip the wire, big thing is breaking down those electronics rest is all low money makers but they add up.

Okay, she clearly stated that some of the items DO WORK. Why is everyone suggesting scrapping stuff that can and will bring her more cash if sold then to scrap?

Go on craigslist, search for the items (washer, dryer, etc) that work, and see what they are selling for right now (or trying to be sold for), then sell yours a little cheaper and if your area is line mine, in less then 24 hours it will be sold!

Couple of tips: Cut the copper lines off the freezer (some lines are steel, which is magnetic). Strip that wire for the experience. Cut that pole off the cement base.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Thanks for the quick responses.
I am located in North GA. OH I found a bunch of old 5 gallon paint cans in their too. I was about to throw them away, great idea to use them to house the metal/wires. I have a magnet so that would help identify which metal is which. I guess I would need to buy a sledge hammer for the cement on the b-ball pole, that thing is heavy. I can't even drag it. I was reading somewhere that a sawzall(whatever that is) would be able to cute the pole, is that correct? There is no way i can pick it up otherwise. Lastly, I will put the working items on craigslist to see if I can sell them. The microwaves, motorized scooter and ride on car all work.

This is the beginning, I still have the attic and storage closets in the house to clean.

I too think CL is the way to go with most of it that works, but that tv cable might not be worth much? that baseball pole might be best donated to a kids baseball club, they might even swap you some more scrap

Lastly, I will put the working items on craigslist to see if I can sell them. The microwaves, motorized scooter and ride on car all work.
Just remember that on Craigslist, good pictures of the items help sell it faster, makes for less questions. Yep, if it was cable tv coax, check the center conductor, scrape it with a pocket knife or use your magnet I'll bet it's copper coated steel. If you don't want to mess tearing down the computers, someone from the forum might buy them from you. Here's a pic of a Milwaukee sawzall, it's a motorized hacksaw,

The directtv coax has a cu center conductor. Lots of coax has cu coated steel center conductor. The directtv coax is one type of coax I will strip to get the cu out of it. Mike.

Sawzall is actually a trade name for a Milwaukee reciprocating saw. Like a lot of things (ie: bandaid, coke etc), it's used for anything similar. If it's capitalized, it's being used as a tradename.

Here's a thread on scrapping your computers

And here's one with lots of ideas about what to do with it all
    http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/showt...-Professionals!

If they're old enough to belong in a museum, or new enough to still be usable, they'll bring much more whole, and if you go that route, or scrap, the computers hard drive can (not always extremely likely, but "can" ) contain sensitive information that you'll want to be careful with

That link is to heart Walk, do they accept old pc's as donation?

When I think about it, all the PC's work, they are just really old. I like technology so I just get new pc's and laptops when they are on sale and keep the old ones. I never considered selling them because I didn't think anyone would want anything that old.
