    "irony" aluminum vs aluminum

whats the difference? the yard i go to only has "irony" and only pay 13-15 cents a pound. but i here other places pay 50 cents plus. i brought back a bunch of snowsled chassis's and they marked it as irony aluminum. its been bugging me to say the least. live and learn

Did you take it back? Or sell as is?

You must have had iron brackets or hardware on it. If it sticks to a magnet, it needs to be removed.

    Wanna hear something funny?

I was about 15 or 16. Took some aluminum in from an old camp trailer. Totally new to scrapping.

Guy says "that's dirty. we'll pay more if it's clean". (it had dirt on it, I thought it was silly but okay...I wanted more $$.

Took it back home, washed it off and came back.

Yeah...that wasn't the kind of clean they meant. lol

I'm sure somebody can give a more technical answer, but it has to do with the actual aluminum alloy. Some material does have some magnetic property to it--a magnet will stick, but not strongly, even though it's aluminum. That's why (or because), it's iron-y.

On edit: Hmmpf. The above is what I was told at the yard once about what I thought was an aluminum storm door, but got paid as irony aluminum. (It was otherwise clean of ferrous hardware.) After some research, I can't find anything to support that. So, never mind...

lmao thats hilarious! it wasnt straight aluminum, it had some steel mixed in like brackets ect. this was my first load of scrap ive ever brought back and i didnt know about the magnet trick back then. it makes sense now. Now i wish i would have spent more time preparing it. I had 840 pounds and 840x.55=$462. ****, owell

It hurts. We've all been there. Live and learn and know what to look for in the future.

Was it a lot of steel?

Once separated it wouldn't have been 840 lbs of aluminum. None the less would have been worth the effort for sure.

I edited my reply above. In the course of researching though, I came across this nice web page that gives some good details on grades of scrap aluminum: http://tubbyscrapmetal.webs.com/gradesofaluminium.htm

If you know your yard you can get unppd alum .25-.35 lb. for mostly clean screws staples and rods in ext or sheet. All the rest of that dirty stuff keep plenty of iron on and collect your .15 a lb. I usually try to make it 70% iron 30% alum if Iam going to call it irony. Who's your scrapyard vamped...Newport? Carmel? ...try Skowhegan

they tend to overlook some of the dirty aluminum when you haul in a 2000 pound trailer load of aluminum

as far as hard drive bodies, i get cast AL for those... if they have pressed in fittings, or bearings or something thats irony, and i cant pull it out, i will take my grinder and cut it flush. they dont give me trouble for cutting it flush, and they pay me for cast at about .45-.50/lb or something like that.
