    Mazda CX-7 Catalytic Converter

I picked one of these up from a dude that works in an auto shop a couple weeks back for 35$. Wanted to sell it on ebay, but learned you have to have them certified before you can do that. Thanks, EPA. Anyway, I'm curious as to how much it's worth in scrap, and also what the exact process is to certify cattys so I can sell it for reuse. It seems in good shape and the honeycomb looks very clean on both sides. Figured it was a good buy at 35$, hope I wasn't wrong.

If i where to sell them for re use id just sell it on CL. That way theres no environmental BS. May be worth quite a bit, i know new aftermarkets can be 4-500. No idea what it would be worth as scrap tho.
If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...

Who said they had to be certified? And for what? Cats can't be reused. It's illegal. Can only be sold for scrap recovery. Or boat anchor, yard ornament, whatever.

I currently have it listed on CL, haven't yet got an bites, though.

I learned about the certification when I tried to list it on Ebay. They have an advisory linking to the official EPA policy on used cattys. I know some states like New York won't let you resell them at all. I posted the add anyway hoping not to get a 25,000$ fine but Ebay took it off rather quickly. You have to have an actual certificate listed in the description. Otherwise you have to sell it as scrap. They have them anywhere from ten to 500$ on there.

I believe Focker wants a photo of the side view
like these >> scrap catalytic converter | eBay

I see you posted the correct photos while I was typing

You can sell it as scrap on eBay
just not as a good USED cat

How come? It looks perfectly good, undamaged and still has good honeycomb. Is there no way to get it tested and certified?

List it as scrap, what the buyer does with it when they receive it is up to them.

That looks to be a small foreign which is anywhere from $50-$80.Also you have to sell them as scrap for recycling only.It is illegal to sell them in the usa to be reused by the epa and if you are caught selling them for someone to reuse then thats a big time fine.

Looks to me like it is a after market, the outer tin shield is most of the time a easy way to spot after market cats I think that why you got no hits on e-bay value $5.00-10.00

I was thinking aftermarket as well.. but even though I handle a few of these from time to time.. I'm always learning from my core buyer. I took one in not to long ago, this particular one had the word "FLOW" stamped on it- and I thought "CRAP.. this is an aftermarket" turns out it was an OEM "X-Body" and paid $160.. what a glorious day- from $7 to $160 from an honest core buyer!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

Agree with Focker, it's definitely not an aftermarket. Small foreign.
