    Pit scrap

Since it's not the sort of thing you're likely to get by cleaning out somebody's garage, I was just wondering if anybody else here is familair with Pit Scrap?

    What is it?

Found out. It's the byproduct of blast furnaces. Nice find, but how did you come across it?

People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Right you are, Mick.

There's one site where I frequently do excavation that's a slag dump.

My understanding is that when they scrape the molten slag off the top of ladelfuls of molten steel, it falls into a pit, where they use heavy equipment to load it out. Sometimes they get a little steel mixed in with it, hence the name, Pit Scrap.

It usually doesn't pay too well (sometimes as bad as, "You can dump it if you want, but we're not paying for it"), but it's heavy enough that even when it gets to a few bucks/hundred the weight adds up and makes the trip worthwhile.

So, imagine my surprise when I saw it so close to the top of the pile this evening.

That load in the picture is probably the most I ever had at one time, although the company that did the site work on that job had probably ten times that amount. And recently, I haven't come across much at all, and I don't anticipate seeing a whole lot in the near future either. However, the yard that buys it from me always seems to have some that they've gotten from other sources.

"Much" is a relative term. Since you have only the one post, I don't have any idea of how much you're looking for, or why. If it would help you, and my friends at that yard, I'd be happy to try and put you all in touch with each other. Shoot me a PM if you like...

I "want" a thousand bucks a hundred, Lol.

I haven't taken any in recently, but it's varied from $8/hundred at its peak, down to, as I said above, "you can leave it but we're not paying for it." That's why I always call now before I even bother putting it in the truck. If ferrous in general is low right now, as I read here recently, they may not even be buying it right now. Of the handful of yards I deal with, only one of them ever buys it at all.

By "skulls", do you mean the stuff from the bottom of the ladle cars? I've heard them called buttons. I've only ever found one of those, and it was small enough to pick up by hand. The site I find this stuff on had railroad access at one time, but for many decades after that, everything that came up there was trucked up cold.

What do you commonly pay for it?
