    Types of Aluminum

We went to the local yard in Ma. last week in Chelsea, lots of scrap metal yards there. This was my first trip to the scrap yard. What a zoo, people backing in unloading into different carts, hustled over to the scales. Weighed in, paid in cash for your load and you were out of there in an extremely short amount of time.
We had to seperate the aluminum rims from the aluminum bumper support brackets.
Then we had a couple of intake manifolds. And some lighter aluminum gutters.
I did not know that rims were different from the welded bumper baking supports ?
So I guess my question is how many types of aluminum is there and how do you seperated it before going to the scrap yard???
Thanks in advance for the reply.

Look this over for the basics. Plus, alum wheels are separate - take off any steel, weights and the valve.

Sorry Mick. I should checked the link before I thanked you for it. Still doesn't answer my question. Imma just have to post it at risk of people getting mad about it. I just don't have any luck with the search bar here without having to spend hours reading things I either already know or don't care to know yet.

They have some stuff listed there that I've not heard of before, I don't think all yards break it down like that. They have a lot of alum. listed tho.

So far my experiences with aluminum have been:

Sheet (which sometimes they lump together heat sinks, aluminum poles, nails, etc)
cast (old cast grill tops and bottoms, parts of motors and housings, etc)
    rims
    extrusion (window/door frames, etc)
    siding
    cans

They also weigh gutters separate but it goes under sheet so not sure why they do that if its lumped with the sheet lol.

sometimes it just depends on who's working that how how they separate it too it seems. Once I had a guy separate my extrusions from my other aluminum but then my brother weighed his stuff after me and they didnt separate it ( same guy ) so....*shrugs*

I think that was from another thread asking about how to ID different types of aluminum. I answered it (I think) over there.

I hadn't asked the question at that point but I still had the question and was looking for the answer...which I couldn't find. I had thought the link he'd posted was what I was looking for and thanked him before even looking at it. Didn't realize you could remove the thanks. Oh well. Still good info. Just not what I was looking for.

What's on Second...Who's on first... and I Don't Know's on third. Reading the above posts reminded me of that bit for some reason. Hijack in progress but since he figured it out in a different thread it's fair game.
