Dirty Stainless Steel

A short time ago I turned in some oven heating elements and was payed dirty stainless price for them. Never knew about a dirty stainless price! So I started saving all stainless steel that stuck to a magnet (I would normally toss this in with my steel) to see what they would say. I got payed .13 a pound for dirty stainless. It was .10 when I turned in the heating elements...

A yard here buys the stainless if slightly magnetic

You can also throw in stainless with other metals (or nonmetals) attached. I use this category when something is too hard to break down.

Some yards also have dirty aluminum and dirty brass categories.

Our yard pays about $0.15 pr/lb for "dirty" stainless but stainless, magnetic or not goes into one pile (as 304 SS) for about $0.45 pr/lb. Oddly enough, the cast aluminum (dirty and clean) is always on the same exact pay scale as the stainless.

Mine has dirty alum, but not dirty stainless. Usually if I have something slightly magnetic like that they'll let me throw it in with my stainless if it's not a huge amount. This is my main yard an hour away, they make the drive well worth it.

My yard also docks me for ss pieces that are over 4 ft long.... I never understood that... its like a .5 difference... but they do pay the same regardless of alloy magnetic or not

Did the dirty stainless have iron on it? Screws or other ferrous metals? If so it's the same concept as irony aluminum. Or was the dirty stainless magnetic? If so it's a different alloy of stainless.
