    Get that silver and gold

If your a scrapper that money is tight and life hits you hard - still you can buy a little silver and gold each month or up to 6 months
based on a 5 week month

    Using APMEX
    As of Dec 12 2013

    gold - 1 gram $49.64

    silver -1 oz $21.67

need to save $266.34 for the purchase
this money amt allows for 1 dollar per coin shipping

For sure $10 a week will get you a little every 6 months
Premium over spot is a reality
shipping to me $1 buck a coin is OK
If prices hold tight for the next 5 -10 years
not the worst way to spend some pocket change .

per week $53.27 for a one month purchase
per week $26.63 for a two month purchase
per week $17.76 for a three month purchase
per week $13.32 for a four month purchase
per week $10.65 for a five month purchase
per week $8.88 for a six month purchase

If your a young scrapper brown bag a lunch once or twice a week
or sell off some copper each week
    Give up the cigs

I would be very skeptical buying gold or silver; but especially gold. It's dropped $665/oz since Sept 2011 and $90 of that in the last couple months. Some predictions are of a rebound early next year before another drop later in the year. Unless you really understand economic principles and what's happening (think world-wide propping up of countries, as our own government is throwing money into our's), I'd suggest avoiding any speculation of commodities.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Mick What you say has validity I feel long term Gold or silver is at least as safe as the economy & the buying power of precious metals .
What I am actually recommending is a win win .
Lets look at the over all truth of the way most of us spend money . Lets get past the money we have to spend, even money for toys for kids as they deserve to have some good things in life if it can be delivered to them.
We need to look at other things
    Fast food
    snacks
drinks from the gas station when you get gas
    cigarettes (possibly)
    Flash in the pan hobbies
Just blowing out wasteful money you know not where it even went.
YEAR AFTER YEAR - Year After Year
So what do you have for all listed above ZERO and with a little care and planing Eat drink be merry
just conserve - Make your own Ice tea save that $2 bucks per gas fill up get soda on sale at supermarkets
    make you own lunches
Take the lost money and buy a little Gold & Silver or if you have a better plan do some thing else with the lost money
I started to day no fast food cut out the muffin and coffee & Brown Bagged it
Day one $6 not spent at Kentucky fry
$1.75 Muffin $2 coffee Thats $10 My brown bag cost was $3 Turkey sandwich Tea Peanut butter Jelly
$7 bucks towards my goal of AMPEX

I love your plan. I have one suggestion though. Find a local coin shop and buy your eagles from them. No shipping and your helping support your local small business.

I like your way of thinking about this. In no time, you will see the rewards start to accumulate. If you can think about the big picture, spending conservatively really pays off. When it becomes a habit, the only thing you will notice is the payoff at the end. In your case, it will be a huge pile of gold and silver.

I have a local shop & I can't complain with them $2 bucks to the even dollar above spot, BUT some weeks there is no silver or others get it before me .
another shop has not sold any silver once it went below $30 , so he must be stocking up BIG .
So the APMEX will help keep the flow going wile I still use local as available .

    --------------
I was watching a movie on Turner Classic Movies looked to be early 1940s .
And i noticed some thing that was just a passing nothing in the day & just a casual thing .
2 men ordered drinks , Grape juice actually , the drinks were served and Fred Astaire pulled carefully from his paints what sounded like a Dime hitting the serving table
& you know what - - he even got change .
I still remember my father telling me for one nickel in the 30's 40's you could get a real sandwich a drink & desert
That .05 equals a conservative $7 so a silver dollar was like $100 if not $140 . Go to a deli and get 20 lunches year 2013.
seems the 1930 40 's may very well be on the far left and 2013 is on the far right - but the value of precious metals hangs tight .
As always there are better investments and many worse

That's why precious metals are a hedge against inflation. If you had a dollar bill from the 30's (forgetting about silver certificates and their collector value) and kept it until today - it would be worth $1. A dollar's worth of silver on the other hand would be worth a whole bunch of dollars.

Today, we talk about the price of gold and silver going up and down. In reality, what is usually happening is the dollar is getting stronger or weaker and can thus purchase less or more of a precious metal. Silver tends to be more volatile than gold - that's because it has industrial uses as well. Copper tends to go up and down based on industrial needs (i.e., how much does China need), gold reflects strength/weakness of a fiat currency, and silver does both.

Soon as it's legal for me to home brew whiskey, etc. I'll gladly stop buying it. The Feds frown on me having a still in my backyard tho.

On the brightside, this is why I'm saving certain things for refining. Either way it stacks up for the future.

Sirscrapalot - Off to lobby for making moon shine home brewing legal.

I heard it said once that an ounce of gold will have bought a fine suit of gentlemans' clothes throughout history. You can't say that about any fiat notes, issued by anyone, ever. In fact, they are made to be worth less the moment they are printed. I'll hedge my bets with metals any day.

You can still brew beer and make wine at home. And you can actually run a still as well - provided you pay the excise tax, get a bond, fill out the necessary application, and have the proper equipment and buildings (it can't be your house though). The particular law is at 27 CFR Part 19 and can be found at eCFR — Code of Federal Regulations It's probably not a cost-effective endeavor though.

Perhaps if all of us chip in a little though, you can distill us all a little for Christmas

Yea...much cheaper to just go buy a bottle. Feel free to send all your copper tubing tho! All donations will receive some gin in return! Less dealing I gotta do with the feds, the better in my opinion. Their already watching me in my games, an my quote thread! /snicker

I get to go on a tour of the White House when I head up to Va to visit my sister in law(She works there, part of her job, they move her to different places) before Christmas, I'll ask the Pres about it. lol.

Sirscrapalot - If I don't like my spy, can I exchange it for one I do like?

I get that eagles will always be worth a dollar face value no matter what but why are you buying eagles? The premiums are too high in my opinion

Any metal should always have some kinda value , That value I bet will equate with product values .

Guys for me though the garden path has a truth . I was not organized and as known was hit. I guess 20 ounces were also lifted . So clearly the draw back is security and ultimately ones safety if said home invasion could occur with a choice you life or the GOODS. .

Once there was a Twilight Zone show that about 3 or 4 families with an appearance as best of friends
till some kinda radio announcement told of imminent danger of bombs
well the one family with the bomb shelter had there home trashed and finally bomb shelter broken into by there friend neighbors
ONLY to find out it was a false alarm .
    ----------------
Desperation of our society now ain't gonna be a pretty sight

On ebay eagles seem to sell better / at my local guy the premium is usually $3 compared to $2
wile silver is silver eagles even to me are extra real , more trust . even though counterfeit silver coins do happen on all types in the after market
On ebay i notice silver sellers from china seem to have gotten a little hurt in reputation

Good advice overall to save on a regular basis. Whether you cut out smoking, pack more and eat out less, or make other adjustments, the difference between having a rainy day fund vs living day to day is huge. When I pay my kids their allowance, it's a review each time - what do we pay first (tithing) and second (save for the future). Personally I put my money into various savings accounts for various goals or the stock market - but metals work as well. In my mind even stuffing money saved in a mattress is better than not saving at all. Having the money available to act when opportunity knocks gives you a huge advantage, and having money for a rainy day will save you money from debt. That said, if you're paying 25% on a credit card balance, probably better to pay that off faster rather than hoarding a save pile.

Random Quote: If you don't manage your money, it will manage your life.

For investment, I will always go for land. Not houses - plain, undeveloped land. I bought 60 acres in '95 for $62,500. Have had timber sales which have returned the initial purchase price. Built a house and garage for $118,000. Valuation is now over $300,000.

How did you find silver dimes? The way you said it doesn't sound like they cost you anything.

Oops, my post was removed, so I guess I broke a rule on the forum by mentioning a company I do business with. Let me rephrase this. Other companies sell G&S cheaper than the other company mentioned above. Comparison shopping is recommended.
