    Rims and tires

I find usable tires with bent rims and good tire/rim combos pretty often.
What is the best way you have found to turn these into a profit?

Sell the rims as #1 iron. Sell the tires (on Craig's List, etc) as trailer tires. You will need to buy a machine to dismount the tire, though, as yards will charge you to take it.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Good info Mick!

I have read on the interwebs that it is possible to remove tires from rims using hand tools (pry bars etc) has anyone tried this and have any tips?
Also, is the best/easiest way to deal with single straight rims is to scrap them or have people had success selling those.

My thought is that people are more likely to be looking for a single used tire than a single rim...

I've removed tires from rims with a pry bar, but it destroyed the tire, and jacked up the rim too

Some rims are aluminum too, double check those.

I just checked with my local tire shop, it would cost $5 each to get them dismounted, or I could try to remove the tires myself but possibly destroy it.
    Hmmmm...

Yes, I've done the sledge hammer and pry bar thing - never again. That was (a LONG time ago). At minimum, get one of those "power-by-armstrong" tire machines. I think Harbor Freight sells one. There's a couple threads on here about them, but I can't find one at the moment. Anyone help with that?

The link in that forum post doesn't work. I don't think Harbor Freight sells the product any more.

Yes, mechnic688, that was the thread. I don't know about that thing, Silverbus. Might work. Looks like it's trying to take off, though .

Well I went to Harbor Freight today and they didn't have any of the tire changers in stock.
Went to tractor supply and bought a Larin brand one for $54.99
Larin is usually better quality anyway.
I also bought a tire iron/spoon tool while at Harbor Freight ($5.99,
Compliments of Bigblue12v,, hope this helps.

I've had good luck selling decent tires to a local auto repair/tire shop. Try the used tire guys or the local non chain repair shops. Some of these places you can work with regardling used but in good condition parts, tires, rims, etc....Getting hooked up with a couple shops can net you some additional cash on this stuff and these guys are getting a bargin on something they know they can use on a job or roll over in the future.

I think I recall someone saying that they would take their tires on rims to the tire place, have them remove the tire and keep it, and in exchange got the rim back to either scrap or sell.

Check local used tire shops as some also do scrap metal and if the tire is good then you may get a few dollars more then the scrap yard will give it to you without having to work and take the tire off.

I have done 4 or 5 aluminum rims via the prybar and big screw driver method and it normally takes me 30 mins to an hour to take off a tire.... not fun.

Well a few days ago I saw a 24 in tire with perfect tread in a neighborhood. I left it and had been thinking about getting it and trying to sell it after the fact. Well today in my riding around I found an aluminum rim with a good tire on it. I got the idea to see if the 24 in tire was still on the curb and sure enough it was so I figured that I would give it to the tire shop and see if he would pull the tire off the aluminum rim for free. Well it turned out there was a bad spot on the inside of the tire making it no good(or so he said) but he then saw the other rim and was like I will buy it off you. He looked at the rim and tire(tire was good) and he gave me $15 for it when I more then likely would not have gotten more then 12 for it after 45 mins of fighting to remove the tire.

    Hope this helps.

I use a sawzall also. I have just found in my driving jaunts with youngest son that there is a place that says it buys used tires. I havent stopped in yet I will next time we go out but if I can sell decent tires I'm going to start picking up rims with decent tires on them. Otherwise it costs 3 bucks to get rid of each one by me at the main recycle plant so any money Id get for the rim would just even out what I paid to dispose of the tire. Oldest son says to just run over the tire with a vehicle to get em off I dont know if that works for real though!

Find the right shop and a case of beer goes a long ways, Also tell them you will buy their aluminum rims and lead weight(more beer money). I make about $1000 off one of my local shops a year. They hold the wheels I get them when I go to the yard 170 miles away and give them half. Every time I go in they have more wheels than the last time.

I had 2 alum rims, same thing, one had a tire on it one didn't.

rim w/ tire sold flat rate at yard for $10.00
rim w/o tire sold for $13.80 priced per pound.

Hard to say which I'd rather do... if it would cost me $4 to get rim removed.
