stainless will still spark with a grinder tho.... if it is soft, then it is probably aluminum.... dull grey color could be zinc

yeah, no spark on either of the pieces, they have some weight to them, the pictures does not show it that well but the silver looking ones are firm and shiny same for the others cant bend even the thinnest piece by hand maybe if i took a hammer to it i could prob bend/ dent it,

They would be Brass and Aluminum. I thought the silvery stuff would be Stainless, but no sparks as well.

With VCR's beings sold at much lower prices now than when they first came out, they wouldn't be using "precious" metals in them, especially that big. Most electronics use trace amounts, and normally they are only found in the circuit boards if they have any at all because of the more durable conductive state they possess.

As for it not bending, I can't remember what the guy at the yard told me now as it has been awhile, but the aluminum like that is sorta like a cast aluminum.

Looks like Brass and Aluminium to me. I have similar looking parts at home from a money counting machine, so thanks for the extra information.

Brass and aluminum's what I figured as well. Just did one a couple days ago. It's be nice if they was chunks of gold and silver. That'd make for one expensive VCR though. Wasn't sure if them aluminum wheels was cast or extrusion. I have trouble telling the difference. I heard heat sinks are extrusion. I had always though they were cast. Just have to hit it with a hammer I suppose. Cast doesn't bend.

Yes cast aluminum and brass. Cast aluminum becomes shinny like that when it is machined.

I have about 20 vcrs left to be tackled..... Brass and aluminum. I just take the motors and as much brass and aluminum I can get before I get frustrated and throw the rest in shred. There are a ton of tiny brass pieces but they take a lot of smashing and prying to get out.
