(scrapper tip)money in clothes dryers and motors worth only alum breakage

i always break down my dryers because there is always change $ inside of them! one time i got over 7 dollars in change out of 1 dryer. now that being said on to the second part of the title. up here in chicago i used to get electric motors price for the motors but quit doing it for awhile. well i tried bringing some in to the local yard after a long hiatus and they said alum breakage well after going to a few other ones they said the same thing its aluminum coated wire with a red coating of sorts but if you cut it open its aluminum on the inside so i guess the scrap yards were getting duped themselves by buying these as electric motors(they didnt pay as much as starters or alternators but on average i would get .17 a pound for them. but not anymore lol. I still take my dryers and washers apart in the search for loose change though. every penny counts boys!

WOW ...7 dollars is great ..ive never found more than a dollar or so in a dryer....i always do the same thing you mentioned though....i gota know whats in there before i junk em.....the best ive found in a dryer was and old silver dollar one time, it was one of the real silver ones.....

i also haul off recliners and couches that recline for folks...i get the metal from the reclining mechanisims ...ive found countless goodies in them..most recent i found 3 packs of unopened cigarettes, and about 2.50 in change...i always cut recliners and couches open...

my favorite thing i scrap that i find hidden lost treasures in,,is cars...i once got 4 brand new tires from the trunk of an old lincoln,,,that was a good payday..especialy considering cars were worth about 2.00 dollars per hundred back then...i also found about 100 pounds of assorted nuts in a car one time...there were all different kinds from pecans to cashews, actually about everything except peanuts...believe it or not i made alot of money off of those nuts...

I ran into the same thing recently with appliance motors. 1 yard checks all motors before buying. If it is aluminum wire it goes as dirty aluminum. 2 of my other yards still buy it as electric motor. Sure that will change at some time.

Most of the time there is nothing major wrong with an appliance I get. I repair and sell it for more than scrap. After cleaning all the change/goodies out of course. If you're not sure what is wrong with an appliance, Google the model and symptoms.

It is not the scrap yard, its the buyer that want the motors seperated. I am glad they can still go in together here for the same price $.25 lb last time I went.

The best I got was a little over $20.00 but then again it was the dryer from my house. Mike
