Xboxs with the red ring of death...gets an unusual new life.

I got one I couldn't fix...and I had a laptop of my cousin's with a bad hard drive. Put two and two together and his computer got a 250gb xbox hard drive (they are the same as laptops...regular 2.5 sata drive) All in all, free hard drive, working computer and I still get half a pound of heatsink and almost a pound of motherboard out of it.

Thanks for the info, I have an Xbox with the same problem and haven't broken it down yet. I didn't know it had a laptop HDD in it, I've only torn one down before and didn't pay much attention to it.

the hdd is on the outside of the xbox.
it also works the other way around you can use laptop hdd's for more storage on your xbox after reconfiguring.
Although some newer games will not allow such taking of microsofts money

Well, that's why I never pass up game consoles, especially Xbox. In almost every situation the motherboard will have gold plating, theres going to be at least one particularly big heatsink, controllers have silver switch contacts and the sticks can be desoldered and sold in lots on ebay for about a buck each. The big video out connector on the back (and the hdmi) connector are both heavy plated gold, I seperate them and save for ebay auctions. HDMI connectors and the cord are heavy plated connectors almost always since they are designed to be plugged in and disconnected many times.

I thought those little balls were gold-plated silver - but my magnet picks them up. Now I'm not even sure if it's really gold plating.
